I want Lion to win everything as justice for its Oscar shut out. It holds up better than most of the BP nominees it was up against in my opinion. I kind of want The Lego Batman Movie to win Sound though, just to spread the wealth.

All I care about here is Lion sweeping really. I have heard of Berlin Syndrome though I don’t know what it is about.

Lion only deserves a win in Score. Jasper Jones should rake up all it’s nominations, except maybe Sound which should go to Lego Batman Movie.

Not even for Cinematography?! We can agree to disagree, but I thought the film looked gorgeous. Greg Fraser’s win here would be a solid consolation prize for his Oscar loss. His work in Lion wasn’t a magical as Linus Sandgren’s work in La La Land, so why not give him a win here when there is far lesser competition? Plus, Jasper Jones isn’t nominated there so it wouldn’t mean a loss for your fave.

Regarding categories they do compete like Picture, I also had not even heard of Jasper Jones, so I might agree with you if I saw it. Lion just moved me so much, that’s all.

Yeah sure, Cinematography was pretty good, and I’ll give it to Nicole Kidman, she was pretty good, but Patel’s accent is still shit-screamingly bad and I’m disappointed in AACTA.

@andymaccamcgaw What about Sunny Pawar? He also isn’t competing against any actor from Jasper Jones, so would you be cool if he won?

Thank you very much! As a huge Hugo Weaving fan in general I approve of his win, even without having seen Jasper Jones. I’m also happy you agree that Garth Davis deserves to win Directing for Lion. Do you live in Australia? How did you see all of these movies?

Lion will most likely win Best Film although I would prefer Ali’s Wedding won. Actually I would prefer Don’t Tell but it wasn’t nominated for Best Film. Don’t Tell deals with the same subject as Spotlight but is a much better film.

Yeah I live in Australia, and if Weaving were to win for Jasper Jones it would be his third straight win in this category (he won for The Dressmaker and Hacksaw Ridge the past two years) and his seventh win overall. And I’m pretty surprised that Aden Young wasn’t nominated for Don’t Tell.

Palmer was amazing in Berlin Syndrome (which deserved way more attention than it got but that’s also my Riemelt-loving ass talking), if she wins it’d have me happier than Jimmy Barnes in a cloud tbh

Wow! I did not think that this topic would generate any conversation so thank you for contributing!

I did love Jasper Jones and am happy to see it nominated in several categories. It’s a shame that Levi Miller and Aaron L. McGrath weren’t recognised.

I however, am rooting for a Lion sweep. Personally, I feel that Dev Patel did a great job in this film and his accent was fine (in my opinion and as an Australian). If Lion loses any categories it will be Lead Actor, Sound and/or Costume Design. I feel they are the categories where it’s most at risk.
