Speculation as to which films are eligible and what might get nominations for Independent Spirit awards. I’m assuming – based on the Gotham nominations – that Room will be eligible despite it’s designation as being from Ireland/Canada? If so, I think Room could sweep the nominations: Best Feature; Male Lead (Tremblay); Female Lead (Larson); Supporting Male (Tom McCamus); Supporting Female (Joan Allen); Director; First Screenplay; Cinematography.

99 Homes isn’t getting any Oscar traction, but I am hoping it will get major nominations, particularly for Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon’s terrific performances.

Blythe Danner was wonderful in I’ll See You In My Dreams.

Lily Tomlin will come in second to Brie Larson for Ms. Tomlin’s performance in Grandma – not convinced LT will get an Oscar nomination – she feels borderline & “fifth slot” possibility to me (but I suspect one of the brits will get that slot).

What other films will be eligible?? They always nominate a few films that never get shown here where I live… is the budget for Spotlight (Gotham nominee) too high to qualify?

I thought ‘Carol’ budget was $30 million.

I’m not sure if Carol will be eligible… but I absolutely think Joan Allen will get a nomination for Room (and deserves one).  I personally would like to see Tom McCamus make it in for Room as well; he was so likable and enjoyable as Leo, the step-grandfather.

Is Trainwreck an indie & eligible? Amy Schumacker (sp?) was really good in it…

Anybody know what Spotlight’s budget was? Also, I think Mark Ruffalo would likely be considered “Male Lead” if the movie is eligible…

Tangerine and Diary of a Teenage Girl will do very well in the acting categories and depending on what bigger films are eligible I could see both getting into the best picture race at the Spirit Awards.
