    42nd Annie Award Nominations Announced

By Jerry Beck | Animation Scoop  December 1, 2014 at 11:00AM

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced nominations today for its 42nd Annual Annie Awards recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation.

Eight films were nominated for Best Animated Feature: Big Hero 6 (Walt Disney Animation Studios), Cheatin’ (Plymptoons Studio), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (DreamWorks Animation SKG), Song of the Sea (Cartoon Saloon/GKIDS), The Book of Life (Reel FX), The Boxtrolls (Laika/Focus Features), The LEGO Movie (Warner Bros. Pictures), and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (Studio Ghibli/GKIDS).

The complete list of nominations is posted below – please scroll down. The winners will be announced at a black tie ceremony on Saturday, January 31st, 2015 at UCLA’s Royce Hall at 7:00 pm.

“We had a steady increase in submissions this year and I am excited to say it’s going to be a great awards ceremony,” remarked ASIFA-Hollywood Executive Director, Frank Gladstone. “We added a new category to the mix – Best Character Animation in a Video Game – bringing the total Annie categories (including Juried awards) to 36. The Annies are a true celebration of the best talent in the animation industry, from big studio features to indie films, television series to internet shows, games, shorts and student films alike, as well as a wonderful group of juried award recipients again this year.”

I would love to be able to see these in the prediction center. Now this year might be the year that I like all of the nominees. Cyndi Lauper? Random but I love it.

Shocked to say the least that no one from HTTYD2 or The LEGO Movie were nominated for Voice Acting, especially Cate Blanchett. Oh well. GO BEN KINGSLEY!!

Yeah, that’s a major surprise. They don’t seem to go for the big names in the top contenders like you’d expect them to.

Even so, it would seem logical that they would go with at least one of the actors from Dragon 2 or LEGO Movie. I’m just floored as to how Blanchett didn’t get nominated.

If anyone from Dragon deserve a nomination it would have been Kristen Wiig or Craig Ferguson. I hope Ben Kingsley wins this

I think LEGO Movie will still win here, but Dragons 2 could surprise. Even so, I think it will get a lot of awards as well.

Dragon has the slight edge. It beat out Toy Story 3 in 2010. It won about 50 Annies that night. And if they like the first one even more god knows how much Dragon 2 will win.

It’ll be a bitter victory of DRAGON reigns because Dreamworks Animation is being gutted and faces a grave future.

They do. I feel for their employees. Some questionable management decisions and lack of focus, or spreading their mission to include more diversity for example, left the quality of their films lacking imo.

But the news isnt all bad. DWA has resources afterall. If they can regain their focus on what matters to the buying public, even at only a few films a year, or even one, they can get their mojo back…..maybe.

I think the Annies goes for The Lego Movie anyways.

I’m skeptical, for the same reason that LEGO couldn’t manage an Oscar nod–animators have a very different standard in evaluating an animated film, focusing far more on craft and technical detailing than more general entertainment value.  There might’ve been a protest surge if the Oscar nods had come out earlier, but it’s unlikely to have any impact here.  But for the same reason, whoever wins here won’t necessarily be a good precursor, because these are still animators, while the Oscars will open the ballot to the entire AMPAS membership.  But it wouldn’t surprise me if DRAGON won both.

I agree with pretty much everything you say here. I have very little confidence this year on how the races will go. But I had to make a decision.

I suppose this is what we all want; uncertainty. Lol.
