Did they seriously snub “120 BPM”? Burn it! Done.

Really surprised by the snubs of BPM and Thelma. I also really liked The Divine Order. Out of the ones on the shortlist, I liked A Fantastic Woman the best.

The big winners of the three main european film festivals could be nominated in the same year:

Berlin – “On Body and Soul”
    Cannes – “The Square”
Venice – “The Shape of Water”

disappointed to see BPM snubbed. My vote would have to go to A Fantastic Woman instead

The only two of them that I saw, Loveless and A Fantastic Woman, were fine but not great. Still waiting to find who to root for.

I no longer care about this category without BPM in it, one of my all-time favorite movies and one of four films I gave a grade of A+. They do this every year, snub the best and screw this up. They are going to give it to The Square ): This is beyond disappointing. It would be great if the director’s branch or the writer’s branch give it a nomination. This is infuriating!

I knew something big was missing from the shortlist earlier but couldn’t quite remember what it was at the time! RIP BPM’s Oscar chances. So much for it getting a surprise Best Picture nomination. None of the actors are legends of cinema like Isabelle Huppert, who got nominated for her performance in Elle after her film failed to make the Foreign Language shortlist.

I still am going to see A Fantastic Woman, Loveless, and Oscars be damned BPM, since I am a Spirit Award voter and I need to see all the nominees in International Film in order to make a fully informed decision regarding what I think is the best of that category when I cast my ballot. That is, if I can find them available to watch anywhere! Otherwise, I simply won’t be voting for International Film, for responsibility’s sake.

My predictions ATM with Israel in sixth (might replace Germany or Russia).

I had a hunch BPM might miss. Right now I think it could be between Chile and Israel for their first win. The Square swept the European Film Awards but it could prove too divisive like Toni Erdmann.

I checked and in the recent past there always have been 3 (more frequently) or 2 nominees from Europe. Last time there were 4 European nominees was in 2004 (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Academy_Award_winners_and_nominees_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film).
With this year having only 4 of them on the shortlist, I doubt they all get nominated. It might actually be the time when we have only two European acts, the acclaimed and popular film from Chile and Israel, and a surprise from Africa.

As of right now, I’m predicting:

    A Fantastic Woman
    Foxtrot
    Loveless
    The Square
    The Wound

Even though In The Fade only has a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, it could still be on the bubble due to Diane Kruger’s Best Actress win at the Cannes Film Festival.
