One of the most promising films for next year is the adaptation of Patrick Ness drama low fantasy novel, among the best children books in recent years. The story is about a boy who struggles to cope with the consequences of his mother’s terminal cancer; he is visited in the middle of every night by a monster who tells stories.

Juan Antonio Bayona is directing the film while Patrick Ness himself wrote the script. The cast is lead by Felicity Jones and Toby Kebbell as the parents, Sigourney Weaver as the grandma, Lewis MacDougall as the kid, and Liam Neeson as the monster.

It’s a spanish production and the principal photography ended this February. Focus Features has set for a wide release on October 2016.

“It is an incredible privilege to bring Patrick Ness’ exceptional book to the screen and I couldn’t have imagined better partners joining me in this endeavor. After ‘The Orphanage’ and ‘The Impossible’, ‘A Monster Calls’ is the perfect final chapter in a trilogy centered on the extraordinary strength of the mother-child bond.” – J.A. Bayona

This project sounds really interesting. I’m a fan of Bayona’s work, particularly ‘The Orphanage’.

I read the book. It was kind of boring honestly but it looks like it could be a good movie.

Could be interesting. I’ve seen two of his films before and I thought they were quite good.

I’m always up for a fantasy, although the subject matter doesnt thrill me. I havent read this book either, so not knowing the tone and agenda is both good and not so good for me.
