This year had a larger than normal group of previous Oscar winners/nominees in the acting categories. That branch will most likely have the ability to invite even more of whoever they want this summer.

Other than earning a nomination, the only way to gain an invitation is by applying for membership. Of course we do not know who has applied, but let’s say there are 15-20 open slots for the acting branch this year. Who do you think will have the best chance to be selected?

Some extra background for this year…

15 already members due to previous nominations/wins:
    Amy Adams
    Alan Arkin
    Jessica Chastain
    Daniel Day-Lewis
    Robert De Niro
    Sally Field
    Anne Hathaway
    Philip Seymour Hoffman
    Helen Hunt
    Tommy Lee Jones
    Jennifer Lawrence
    Christoph Waltz
    Denzel Washington
    Naomi Watts
    Jacki Weaver
Joaquin Phoenix invited in 2006 after his most recent nod (but he must have turned down membership after Gladiator a few years earlier, so it is unlikely he joined last time)

    Already members through previous applications:
    Bradley Cooper
    Hugh Jackman

Emmanuelle Riva will be invited to join if she isn’t already a member.
Quvenzhane Wallis will probably not be invited at this age.

Do you get invited automatically if you are nominated? Say if I was nominated for acting, would i get an invite this year? Also, say if I was a director and got invited, are directors allowed to vote for all the categories or just directing. I get that Beyonce was in a bunch of movies, but why she she a member? Does she get to vote on all categories, and what makes her knowledgable, etc?
You said Wallis is unlikely. Do you happen to know who the youngest member happens to be?

The voting makes me very confused.

As for new members, is Michael Fassbender a member? Didn’t notice his name.   I’d like to see Steve Carell/Steve McQueen pop up. Probably Benh Zeitlin/Lucy Alibar, Seth Macfarlane will probably be included. Dwight Henry maybe.

I always find it strange when a nominee isn’t invited. Like, why wasn’t Michelle Williams invited when she was first nominated? I can understand why they wouldn’t invite kids but…Michelle Williams?

Anyway, with so many nominees already having been nominated, this will be a pretty exciting list.

No way are they inviting Riva unless she’s planning on doing Hollywood films in the future, which is highly unlikely.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they invited the likes of Kirsten Stewart, Megan Fox, Lindsay Lohan this year considering they have so many open spots this year.

They probably will invite Kristen Stewart, but I can’t see them (ever) inviting Megan or Lindsay. I can see Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson being invited. Maybe Logan Lerman, too.

If Riva has interest, she could be nominated. But she doesn’t even own a TV or speak English, so it wouldn’t appear she’d be a very active member.
Would Wallis become the youngest ever? At her age, she shouldn’t be viewing nearly all of the potential nominees.

I was under the impression that one gets invited only after receiving an Oscar nomination. Why did actors like Russell Brand, Gerard Butler, Steve Carell etc. get invited to join?

What is JLaw becomes the President of The Academy years from now, when she is nominated, and she votes for herself? Is that possible?

I don’t know what the rules are if you’re president but I know members of the academy are allowed to vote for themselves if they’re nominated. The only example I’ve heard a story about is Barbra Streisand supposedly did for Funny Girl but I’m sure there are plenty of other examples

Actually in her heydays Lindsay Lohan could act circles around J.Law. Oh, and with right director and right script Megan can give very solid performances.

    Random JLaw mention is random.

But yeah, I like Lindsay’s work from before her meltdown (& I keep wishing for her to regain her senses). Freaky Friday, Mean Girls & Parent Trap are three favourites of mine, but she’s not in her heyday anymore. She’s considered a joke and I’d be surprised if she gets invited now.

As for Megan…well, she can’t pick good films.

Kristen Stewart deserves nowhere near the Academy, but I’d like to see Radcliffe(sp) join. But I do think they will begin to skew towards younger performers, etc.

But I don’t agree children like Wallis, and Breslin at the time should join. They are too young to fully comprehend the entire aspect and watch all the films, etc. Should 10 years old be watching The Master, Django Unchained, etc? No.

The vast majority of Academy members across all branches have never been nominees. Some of the craft categories have a higher percentage, but getting a nomination, though it helps greatly in being nominated, is not a prerequisite.

And members can vote for themselves – not sure why anyone should question that. The Streisand situation is curious because she was offerered membership when she only had had one film released, when the usual requirement is at least two. Had her exception not been granted, she would not have tied. (Then there is the question of whether Hepburn decided to vote, or if she voted for herself).
