Facing a backlash over the conspicuous lack of diversity among this year’s Oscar nominees — including Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smithvowing to sit out the upcoming awards show — the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a statement Monday promising “big changes.”
President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said she was “both heartbroken and frustrated about the lack of inclusion” among the nominees and added, “The Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership.”
Those steps will include a review of the group’s membership “in order to bring about much-needed diversity in our 2016 class and beyond.” Boone Isaacs also said the academy has addressed challenges related to its constituency in the past, as when it recruited younger members in the 1960s and ’70s to stay relevant.
The academy does not disclose demographic information about its ranks, but a 2012 study by theLos Angeles Times found the academy to be 94% Caucasian and 77% male, with a median age of 62. In recent years the group has increased efforts to diversify its membership, which numbers more than 6,000, but meaningful change has been slow.

They will probably invite Sofia Vergara and Dwayne Johnson to membership to satisfy America. NO THANKS!January 19, 2016 at 2:31 am #211514
I’m guessing it’s more members? Or a cull on the older white males, somehow?
That I’d be ok with, but if it’s anything involving mandatory quotas on the nominees themselves (I.e. At least one minority per category) then that would be ridiculous.
Ideally, it would be talking to the people who finance and give the green light to films in the first place. If it’s going to be ‘resolved’, it needs to be done so at the root, and across the film industry.January 19, 2016 at 2:35 am #211516
What I’m afraid now is that there’s gonna be be at least one token black nominee every year deserving or not, just to please cerain folks. Ugh.January 19, 2016 at 2:44 am #211518

Exactly. Very good word-use. Becuase for the industry the black snubs are the only real snubs. There are no other minorities around. They don’t exist.January 19, 2016 at 2:44 am #211519
It’s very scary how high the amount of white and male voters are compared to other groups. There needs to be change. Sure, not one where there needs to be some token in every category, but there needs to be some way to balance it out.January 19, 2016 at 2:48 am #211520
Seems like there are already 5 “token” white nominees each year in each acting category, we don’t want them to lose that privilege now do we…
It’s funny how people say they don’t want any quotas and people getting nominated because of their race, no one wants that. But this is already happening, white people and white-male-oriented movies are nominated BECAUSE of their race, because that’s the voting body of academy, straight old white men. And they only are voting for their own consciously or unconsciously.January 19, 2016 at 2:50 am #211521
this is ridiculous, imagine the search : we need more black actors, more female, movie star under 40, gay people and buddhist.
academy members don’t underestimate artists because of their background, their belief, their sexual orientation, or their gender, each member invited to give their opinions for the nomination are sincere, they don’t choose a movie or an actor for that is supposed to represent, only for the greatness of his work, that’s all !!!January 19, 2016 at 3:01 am #211525
OK thank you for your honesty !…January 19, 2016 at 3:17 am #211526
I’m curious PoweR, where were you when 12 Years a Slave won best picture ? Or when Berry and Washington won lead the same year? Were you celebrating their wins or were you complaining about their “stereotypical” roles? Just curious.
