    Hello All,

I’m trying to understand a craft of acting a little bit
more. So I was wondering if someone could answer some of my questions. Are
there any acting technique or styles ? Can all actors be put into some acting
groups (categories)? For example I believe Robert de Niro or Daniel Day-Lewis
are method actors. So if method actors are one of those groups. Are there any
others ? Would somebody be so kind and give me a little insight Laughing ? I did find some
acting techniques on the internet, but not so sure if that’s what I’ve been
    looking for.

    Thank you

This is such a complex issue and the Method (Strasberg’s method) isn’t the only technique out there. It isn’t even the only technique based on Stanislavsky. There is Stella Adler who to me is far more interesting. I recommend reading her book The Art of Acting as well as Robert Lewis’s Advice to the Players, especially if you’re passionate about acting. Even if you aren’t an actor, you’ll learn a great deal about the process. Of course, there is a huge book on Strasberg’s Method but I agree with Stella Adler that using affective memory is useless. We’re humans and there’s that gorgeous thing called imagination.

But to asnwer your question: Every actor is a Method actor. At least the good ones. Jodie Foster doesn’t consider herself a Method actor but she does the same thing Method actors do, but intuitively. The thing is Americans love to throw the Method around just to make things sound a bit more mystical but it’s a process and whatever works is a good thing. Even Stanislavsky didn’t consider his method ultimative. He wrote that it’s something that works for him and other people could add some stuff, remove stuff that doesn’t work for them. The thing is to find something that helps you. That’s all.

Thank you for answer … to put things into context. I write for one movie server. I´m not really a journalist, just like writting about movies in free time so I thought it´d be great to introduce art of acting to the wider audience. To make a list of main acting styles, say something abouth them + some famous representative from movie and television industry. So I was hoping if there is somewhere some kind of list with all main techniques or styles, what these styles are all about + some famous representative ? … then I could go from there Wink

Accents seems to play a huge part in cinema these days. There is a great video on youtube of the late Robin Williams when he appeared on Ellen, displaying that specific gift.

Stanislavsky is considered the father of modern acting. Some of his students went on to found their own schools and branch out into their own acting techniques. Method Acting and Meisner Technique are the most popular among actors. And then there are Stella Adler Technique, Michael Chekhov Technique and Uta Hagen Technique.

Having excellent techniques does not make a person a good actor. Acting
techniques is just a tool, for example a knife is a tool which can help
or harm people depending on the person who uses it. Therefore a good
actor is a person who uses acting techniques to do good, a bad actor is a
person who uses acting techniques to do evil. Training in an actor’s
virtues is more important than training in acting techniques.

    I only know two techniques:
    1. The actor plays it by heart, no matter the many times you have to repeat the scene, like a machine.
    2. The actor needs to feel involved, circumstance-based and create an atmosphere to be able to perform.

This are techniques. The other thing is feelings.
