With the Oscars and Razzies this weekend, I thought I would want to share a simple question for everyone. How many actors appeared in a movie that was nominated for Best Picture, and another film that got a nod for Worst Picture in the same year? I got some examples I can think of and if there’s something I’m missing, leave another down below.
Tom Cruise: Rain Man and Cocktail (1988) – Both won
Dennis Quaid: The Right Stuff and Jaws 3D (1983) – Nominated
John Candy: JFK and Nothing But Trouble (1991) – Nominated
Bruce Willis: Pulp Fiction and Color of Night (1994) – The latter won Worst Picture
Willis also had a very prominent role in North, which was infamous for perhaps being the film that Siskel & Ebert most despised while doing their tv review program.
Hmmm…no mention of Bullock for The Blind Side and All About Steve (both wins for Sandra), two gems from 2009 and two noms for those films in 2010.
I noticed that 1998 had an interesting case.
“An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn” has Harvey Weinstein listed as one of the cast members. The film would go on to win Worst Picture, while Weinstein would win an Oscar for Producing Shakespeare in Love.
Also, Whoopi Goldberg has a cameo in Smithee as herself, and she’d go on to host the Oscar ceremony that year.
Ben Affleck – Armaggedon and Shakespeare in Love
Sandra Bullock – Blind Side and All About Steve
Dev Patel was in both BP winner Slumdog Millionaire and The Last Airbender, but they were released two years apart… so never mind.
