Pedro Almodovar’s new film, a 90 minute comedy about a group of oddball passengers and crew about a possibly doomed airplane, opens in Spain a week from Friday.

It comes to NY/LA on 6/28.

No reviews yet, but US screenings start in a couple weeks.

I think that they will premier it tomorrow or next Friday. I am looking forward to watch it. First comedy in a while.
Trailers are hylarious… and Javier Camara, Carlos Areces and Raul Arevalo are truly comedians.
It is funny that they change completely the spanish name… “Los Amantes Pasajeros” but i guess that they could them find a suitable translation for this word games… It has two meanings
    – Lovers who travell (as the movie take place in a flight)
    – Lovers who are only for just a little time.
Almodovar is always great picking names for this movies

I asked a Spanish friend (from Spain that is, not just Spanish speaking) to explain the title (the words I got, not the meaning), and he said basically it was tough to translate

IMDb says it opens a week from tomorrow in Spain.

But José’s explanation about the title’s meaning is absolutely right. Don’t know why it’s ‘I’m so Excited’ in America…

Travelling Lovers or Lovers in Passing or similar would be bad English language titles though.

This happens sometime. I imagine the song I’m So Excited is in the film, or there is some similar reference.

You’re right, the film takes its title from The Pointer Sisters’ song, which is listed as the #1 track on the Original Soundtrack. I recommend  it, Alberto Iglesias is always a good listen!

Apparently the reviews in Spain have been quite bad for this – the IMDb reaction is not good overall (a user ranking of 4.9)

    Yeah.

I haven’t watched it yet but some friends of mine went to see it this weekend and they hated it. It’s fun but not at Almodovar’s comedy level. Is silly fun and joy, nothing else. Plus, it’s a ENSEMBLE PIECE so it looks more delicious to moviegoers. This is completely my friends’s impression. I’ll post mine once I’ve seen it.

My dearest friend, I am from Spain. From Valladolid, where we are supposed to have the best spanish… Even though it is not almost right…

I ve just watched now the film. It is a very light comedy, It is remind me “Women on the Verge” and the first movies from him.  I liked it but i didnt love it. It is very positive and it is very gayish… Mostly all the male characters are gay. It has lost of references to our political situation, and some parts wont be understood for foreigners, like it happened with “The Bad Education”. At that time i was in Austria, and people complained to me cause i was laughing in some parts of the movie. They didnt got the hidden idea…

Well, i bet he is a conservative voter. This film is just a comedy. A very light comedy. Very crazy, very positive… far from all the latest dramas.

It would have need more time to explore all the characters, but Almodovar said in an interwiew that his goal was, to do his own screwball comedy

I don’t believe in IMDb anymore. Their Top 250 seems kinda crazy. (Django Unchained number 41 of best movies of all time).

Strong marketing and a loyal following beat negative reviews from local critics.

MADRID – Pedro Almodovar enjoyed his best opening weekend receipts — €1.9 million ($2.6 million) — with the comedy I’m So Excited, which Warner Bros. released in Spain, according to figures released Monday by Rentrak Spain.

The comedy averaged €6,320 ($8,200) on its 295 copies and outpaced Oz The Great and Powerful, which earned less than half a much per print. However, Oz beat Excited in total receipts, earning €1.98 million over the weekend.

The box office earnings also toppled the 2006 opening of Volver, starring Penelope Cruz, as Almodovar’s best opening. Volver earned €1.75 million, although it did so off of 335,000 tickets sold rather than the 247,000 moviegoers this past weekend for Excited.

Almodovar’s films usually play well at home, but rely more on word of mouth and longer legs in the theaters than a strong opening. But in Spain, the early reviews panned the film.

“I think the great marketing and the fact that Almodovar has a very loyal following account for the strong opening,” Rentrak’s David Rodriguez said.

Warner used creative marketing, like flash mobs dancing to the Pointer Sisters’ hit I’m So Excited, on Madrid’s central shopping and movie district, the Gran Via.

I wonder how much money will the Pointer Sisters receive from all of this.
