I know not many people care for the shorts categories – but they are great starting blocks for many directors, actors, writers, editors etc.
And I had the privilege of seeing the 8 nominees for the shorts category at the 2011 Australian Film Academy awards last night and if they are eligible for the 2011 Academy awards – I think Australia may just get a couple of nominees – maybe even wins – in these categories.
“The Missing Key” is an absolutely stunning animated short – at 30 minutes long it had one begging for more.
and the Cypriot/Australian live action short “The Palace” is a thrilling drama set in Cyprus 1974.December 17, 2011 at 2:21 pm #41183
Wow! Can’t believe all the responses to my original post (lol).
Well now we all know that the two shorts that I predicted would be nominated or even win – weren’t even shortlisted.
Does anyone know whether “Missing Key” or “The Palace” even qualified for the Oscars this year.
I haven’t seen any of the other films that were shortlisted – but when I saw these two films I was blown away – especially the brilliant “Missing Key”.
I don’t think the Australian film industry is going to have too much to celebrate when the Oscar noms are announced next year. Except for maybe a few technical nods – it’s going to be a very very very lean year.
Seriously – is Happy Feet 2 really that bad? Even the woeful Cars 2 got a Globe nod!March 2, 2014 at 9:45 am #41184
i finally watched the Live Action Short Showcase on demand last night. And I am so glad I did. I really enjoyed all five!
I hope JUST BEFORE LOSING EVERYTHING wins. its an excellent little thriller! i actually found myself on the edge of my seat and the ending was just WOW. loved this one
HELIUM was very good. heartfelt, great visuals. didnt totally grab me but i really liked it.
THE VOORMAN PROBLEM this one will make you think! i really liked it but not sure if i was supposed to laugh or was it a thriller? not sure but i enjoyed it and the premise and outcome are very memorable! pretty short though
THAT WASNT ME was another great little thriller. some of it felt kinda “been there done that” but the last 3-4 minutes really did blow me away. very good
DO I HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING? ok no way this movie wins, i think it was 7 minutes. It was very cute and very funny but it just cant compete with the other 4.
Hard to predict who will win bc now everyone gets to vote here and I dont think thats fair bc you know the majority of the academy didnt watch them. I think they should have kept with the old voting system for this catergory and I also think there should be a way for someone who went to their theatre to see the showcase or watched the showcase on demand to vote!
here is my order
JUST BEFORE LOSING EVERYTHING
THAT WASNT ME
THE VOORMAN PROBLEM
DO I HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING?
if anyone has the day free I would reccomend watching the showcase on demand before the oscarsMarch 2, 2014 at 10:23 am #41185
Not too invested with Live Action or Animated but will stick with “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life” in Documentary and it’s Canadian connection.March 2, 2014 at 10:57 am #41186
