In the 90 year history of the Academy Awards, only 3 animated films have been nominated for Best Picture:

    Beauty and the Beast
    Up
    Toy Story 3

What other animated films should have been nominated for Best Picture, if any?

I think The Lion King should have been nominated for Best Picture. It is still regarded as one of the best animated films of all time. I would have rather had The Lion King than any of the 3 animated films that have been nominated so far.

1940 had 10 films nominated for Best Picture, and PINOCCHIO is better than at least half of them.

^^Yeah I forgot about Grave of Fireflies. That should’ve been nominated too.

    Princess Mononoke
    The Lion King
    Persepolis

There’s also Tower, which should have absolutely gotten into Animated Feature but didn’t so I’m pressed enough to list it here.

    Up WAS nominated for BP.

    Inside Out should’ve been nominated.

I won’t bother with years before the expansion, it makes no sense. I suppose only The Lion King could have possibly had any sort of chance considering it was 1994, such a questionable year in many categories. It was a huge hit and the novelty of Beauty and the Beast achieving that nomination maybe hadn’t worn off.

But as much as I would include The Incredibles (instead of Finding Neverland), WallE (instead of The Reader of course, but Dark Knight was a bigger priority) and Finding Nemo (instead of Seabiscuit or M&C) it wouldn’t have happened at all until it finally did thanks to the expansion where Inside Out seems like the only snub in all these years. Perhaps Coco.

A HUGE favorite of mine was 2009s Mary & Max, but I don’t think it made any sort of impact in the US.
