The first trailer was released today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kilfBvZ7kI4

The set design is incredible and the acting looks great. This could finally get Wright and Knightley the recognition they deserve.

Really? I thought it was a pretty good trailer. Knightley at least looks great in the role.

I was joking Trent, kinda. Ever read the book?

Joe Wright is an odd duck imo. My favorite thing he’s done is the miniseries on Charles II; fairly accurate if not capturing the humour within Charles himself.
His filmography is hit or miss. I’d say “Hanna” is my favorite film of his thus far, and I didnt care for it that much. My guess is that Anna Karenina is in there for costume design, sets, cinematography, and score. Screenplay adaptation? A major task, but if anyone can do it justice, it’s Tom Stoppard, one of my favorite writers of all time.
Maybe a nod for some of the actors. I suppose, Wright could be the lucky charm for Knightley and her underbite charms.

I tried to read the book but I fell asleep. I assume you just spoiled the ending?

Wright really seems to like Knightley (I personally didn’t like Pride and Prejudice but her performance was great). She really fits in with the “babe factor” thing we’ve conceived on this site and I could see her pulling off a win. The costumes also look fantastic.

I don’t see this getting a screenplay nod. I think the “magnum opus of literature” slot in the adapted screenplay category will go to The Great Gatsby.

I read the book and it was phenomenal. I wouldn’t get my hopes up for the movie though, because the book was so great. But the trailer looks pretty good and i see Keira getting nominated for best actress.

    Pardon?

I didnt SAY anything about the ‘ending’ of the book. That book was written over 150 years ago. Was anybody here surprised by what happens to Jesus in any of HIS films?

And Trent; you tried to read that novel in one sitting? Or was that a permanent sleep once it happened?

Joe Wright, Tom Stoppard, Keira Knightley, Jude Law–this looks pretty damn good.

I suppose millions have tried to read Tolstoy’s novel but fell asleep–after all, it is, depending on the edition, around 1,000 pages–but then they woke up and read some more.

    My friend–who doesn’t like anybody–likes Knightley. I
guess she passed that test. I also like Knightley–she was incredibly good in:

    • ATONEMENT
    • PRIDE & PREJUDICE
    • NEVER LET ME GO
    • A DANGEROUS METHOD

Why British accents when it’s set in Russia? Can somebody explain this decision to me, would Russian accents prevent box office success?

Keira Knightley is the definition of
an actress who just hams it up and
    many people confuse overacting with
fine acting.. i saw the trailer to the new
film she has with steve Carell..OMG
looks so bad..and she is even worse.
Her acting in ATONEMENT  was so bad
that she almost kiled the film for me.
She was awful beyond belief last year
in the Cronenberg film about Freud and Jung.
Even her nom in PRIDE AND PREDJUDICE
was undeserved in my opinion…i know there
will be anticipation with the new ANNA KARENINA
coming, but ultimately she will NOT win an oscar
    thank goodness!!!

Really? You can tell that Knightly is “even worse” from a 60-second trailer? Isn’t that the very definition of “prejudiced”?

I also thought the trailer for SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD looked like a silly trifle, and wondered why Knightley was playing a role that ordinarily would go to Natalie Portman, but you can’t tell anything about the acting from that montage of clips.

I know right? it would be better if they had Russian accents. And Babypook not everyone knows the ending, and i would like it for the people who have not read it to enjoy it and not have the ending spoiled…….

Keira Knightly could win the oscar for this.

I’m not convinced at all by this trailer. It looks epic and “pretty” (I didn’t find the images very striking, as they look like every film that tries to go for a “lavish” style), and the cast is kinda solid (I like Knightley fine in some films), but I don’t believe for a second that Joe Wright has what it takes to do this book justice.

I don’t find his style very cinematic, or at least not in a way that feels coherent and a product of an strong visual and narrative identity, and I don’t know if his stuffy approach to everything is the way to do Tolstoy. And yes, what the fuck is it with the british accent?
To me this just looks like every other oscar bait. The book is fantastic, but still, as a film this doesn’t look very promising or exciting.

What the hell are you talking about? “Not striking”? “Stuffy?” Not “promising or exciting”? Could you possibly be more wrong? Try us.
