oh man. Benning just RADIATES. in merely a few lines in the trailer, in that crackling voice and those tired gazes, she conveys so much of what i can only assume is her character’s pain, humanity and incredible strength. i have been rooting for her since American Beauty, but the movie just seems a bit The Ice Storm Lite FM. and Best Actress is such a blood bath this season. in my mind so far, she is at least fourth, after Davis, Stone and Portman.September 27, 2016 at 7:54 am #1201928036
I’d hardly say she’s secured anything, especially with the incredibly crowded field. After watching that trailer, I’m more sure that this movie won’t be much of a player. If I’m wrong, that’s great, but I’m not calling Bening a lock until the movie’s been seen. Simply too many great performances and actresses, both unseen and seen, for me to put my money on her yet.September 27, 2016 at 7:55 am #1201928037
Why would you rank her so low? Bening has been able to secure nominations in competitive years: 2004 and 2010. Those were not easy nominations to get. As of now only Portman and Stone are locks. But the trailers for Viola and Annette are loud enough to disrupt the narrative momentum for everyone else.September 27, 2016 at 8:05 am #1201928047
Bening looks great here, but it’s definitely a smaller scale movie with the same vibe as Beginners (which I loved so). She’s the most overdue contender this year so hopefully, she’ll be able to break into the crazy Best Actress race with at least a nomination.September 27, 2016 at 8:18 am #1201928052
I have Stone, Portman, Davis, Streep, Negga, Adams and Henson ahead of Bening, in that order. Look, I adore Bening but Lead Actress this year is insane.
COMING SOON to The Awards Connection…Horror at the Oscars!
Negga, Adams, and Henson can be and likely will be non-factors with the likes of Bening and Davis.September 27, 2016 at 8:18 am #1201928053
Seems like an ensemble movie. Why doesn’t she go supporting? She’d be frontrunner there.September 27, 2016 at 8:19 am #1201928054

I want her nominated. She can win strictly on overdue narrative for her 6th nod like Winslet!September 27, 2016 at 8:20 am #1201928056

Because she’s the actual lead of this ensemble. Her husband’s movie has her in an actual supporting role. If pushed hard she could be a double nominee this year. Possibly alongside him in the supporting actor category.September 27, 2016 at 8:35 am #1201928072
I’m curious to see if Greta Gerwig’s role is Oscar-material for Supporting Actress. In the trailer she dances and screams and breaks a chair. Not quite sure what to make of that.September 27, 2016 at 8:47 am #1201928078
Greta Gerwig’s going to be a big player someday soon. Maybe not this year, but her work in Maggie’s Plan proves she can both lead a film and give a good performance.
My problem with believing Bening to be a frontrunner is there’s no indication that this is a movie that’ll be a contender. I can see her going Supporting, but nothing about this movie has stood out to me as awards potential other than the baity plot.
