I remember being very impressed with Leslie Mann’s breakout role in Knocked Up. She was able to nail some very emotional scenes, while being hilarious at the same time.

She’s arguably the funniest character in the film, and probably had the best comedic timing. It’s also not like it’s a purely comedic performance either, she does have some dramatic scenes. It was an absolutely brilliant performance.

This is coming from someone who’s not been a fan of her post-Knocked Up work, specifically This is 40 where I think she went way over the top. I also think the film should have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay too. Bridesmaids got best original screenplay and supporting actress, and I think Knocked Up was stronger in both those catagories. Maybe it’s because 2007 was a really packed year.

I could totally see this being Leslie Mann’s oscar clip:

Either that or the scene after the club where she’s crying about getting old.

I’m not terribly over-the-moon about the performance but I actually consider Mann way more recognition-worthy than Oscar nominees Blanchett and Dee that year.

I’d definitely nominate her over Ruby Dee. I mean can anyone say with a straight face that Dee was better than Mann? I bet if they ran a legitimate campaign she would have hit most of the precursors.

I actually looked at IMDB and saw she was nominated for many critics awards. Anyone think she was close to a nomination? I mean Knocked Up had to be really close to screenplay too.

I closely followed that awards season and no, Mann was never really in the conversation. Many expected Knocked Up to garner a handful of Globe nods and, when that failed to come to fruition, it fell off the awards radar completely.

Blanchett playing Bob Dylan is an event. Dee’s nomination was a respectable nod to her career.

I thought Dee was laughably bad. Blanchett can basically do no wrong but I hardly think Dylan is among her finest hours.

Yes she was very deserving. She could’ve been there over Ruby Dee. Don’t remember other people from that year right now, but I’m sure if not Ruby Dee, somebody else would’ve taken that spot and her name wouldn’t be Leslie Mann. I’m sure comedy bias would’ve still kept her from that nomination.

No such thing as comedy bias in the supporting actress category. Comedic performances win all the time there.

    (2002) Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago
(1998) Judi Dench, Shakespeare in Love
    (1995) Mira Sorvino, Mighty Aphrodite
(86/94) Dianne Wiest, Hannah and her Sisters, Bullets Over Broadway
(1992) Marisa Tomei, My Cousin Vinny (most controversial win of the category)
(1991) Mercedes Ruehl, The Fisher King
    (1990) Whoopi Goldberg, Ghost
(1988) Geena Davis, The Accidental Tourist
    (1987) Olympia Dukakis, Moonstruck
    (1985) Anjelica Huston, Prizzi’s Honor

In all fairness, of course, Chicago, Shakespeare in Love, Hannah and Her Sisters, Ghost, The Accidental Tourist, Moonstruck and Prizzi’s Honor were all Best Picture nominees. Knocked Up was a raunchy Seth Rogen comedy.

I know Knocked Up is a lowbrow thing. And, it’s a popular myth the Academy rejects comedy. In actuality, there are two categories where they embrace it, screenplay (either one) and supporting actress.

I’ve said this before, but for Ms Mann, I’ll repeat.

She is, for me, hands down, the most annoying, irritating, “Scanners”-inducing ‘actor’ I’ve seen in a while. Her range is equivalent to a crocodile’s eating habits, without the surprise.
Her consistent ‘whining’ style of acting is equaled by no other imo, and that includes anything which Ms Alicia Silverstone has been in.

MVP of “Knocked Up”?…….gach…..I’ll say, Harold Ramis…

Performances in Apatow Productions films worthy of some awards consideration:

    Paul Rudd, Anchorman
    Gary Cole, Talladega Nights
    Leslie Mann, Knocked Up
    Jonah Hill, Superbad
    John C. Reilly, Walk Hard
    Adam Scott, Step Brothers
    Richard Jenkins, Step Brothers
    James Franco, Pineapple Express
    Adam Sandler, Funny People
    Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids
    Rose Byrne, Bridesmaids

Definitely a brand of acting underrated by the system and the voting body.

Whether your a fan of her character or not, she absolutely nailed that performance and was completely believable. At the time her schtick wasn’t tired. It was a breakout performance that made her the name she is today. I’ll agree she does not have a lot of range since she does play a very similar type of character ever since that film came out.

No, but Judd Apatow would definitely have been a worthy nominee for Best Original Screenplay.
