    I watched the trailer for “Only God Forgives” and was in awe of KST in the mother role, it seriously looks like such a baity role doesn’t it!

    It got me thinking though… the academy loves evil mother characters, I mean there’s been; Mo’Nique, Kim Stanley, Piper Laurie, Angela Lansbury, Diane Ladd, Jacki Weaver… and I know there’s a ton more but I can’t think off the top of my head.

    There’s some other archetypes they really like too, like;

    The unstable woman: Ellen Burstyn, Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz,

    The gay in peril: Sean Penn, Tom Hanks, William Hurt, Greg Kinnear, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhal, Ed Harris, Javier Bardem, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Plummer…

    The psycho: Javier Bardem, Heath Ledger, Christoph Waltz, Mo’Nique…

    The brash comic chick: Marisa Tomei, Bette Midler, Dianne Wiest, Mira Sorvino, Melissa McCarthy…

    The “Jimmeny Cricket”: Robin Williams, Christoph Waltz, John Gieguld…

    Any one else you can add to these? And any character types the academy seems to love.

    An obvious one, but GoldDerby ran a thread on actors who won Oscars for playing drunks (http://www.goldderby.com/photos/261/). I suppose one could define it as “barely functioning alcoholics”. And of course, there are so many other nominees to go with that.

    Barely Functioning Alcoholics: Ray Milland, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, Jeff Bridges, James Dunn, Jessica Lange, Nicolas Cage, Lee Marvin, James Dunn, Gig Young, Maggie Smith, Claire Trevor, James Coburn, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Denzel Washington (Flight), Paul Newman (The Verdict; Hud), Arthur O’Connell (Anatomy of a Murder), Peter O’Toole, Jack Lemmon (Days of Wine and Roses), Albert Finney (Under the Volcano), Tom Conti, Nick Nolte.

    There are really so many.

    Wow can you imagine what would happen if there was a movie about a barely functioning alcoholic prostitute with a disability who became famous for fighting crime???

    Charlize Theron in Monster.

    Quentin Tarantino or Lars von Trier needs to get on that N-O-W.

    I have had the misfortune of seeing Only God Knows and was in awe of how terrible KST is in the film but to be fair everything else about the film is awful so she is just blending in so to speak. Her performance felt like a bad Barbara Streisand drag act with a very potty mouth. For his part, the normally reliable Ryan Gosling is simply catatonic through the whole film.

    The Academy won’t go anywhere near OGK and with good reason. They regulated the far superior Drive to a minor technical nomination so OGK stands no hope.

    No, we need this person to first exist and then have a biopic.

    Haha agree with the suffering wife archetype!
