I have been wondering this since both songs are decent hits and are actually written for the movies of Trolls and Alice Through the Looking Glass respectively.

If both songs were written specifically for their respective movies, then they should be. I saw Alice Through The Looking Glass, and JLF was the first music cue for the end credits, so it’s eligible. What’s weird about CSTF is how far ahead of Trolls and its full soundtrack it was released. Though, since all of the promotional materials for the song clarify that it’s from the movie Trolls, I imagine it will still be eligible.

They seem like they were written for both films.

I also don’t understand why Timberlake released that song about months and months before Trolls is released. It’s not as if the song did anything to help promote the film since the 1st video featured only the cast of a movie nobody knew or cared about so no way anybody was going to say OMG IT’S TROLLS!. People could only imagine these people were his friends. And then after that boring video came another one with only Timberlake as if it was one of his songs from an album that doesn’t exist.

Is that not like Happy from Despicable Me 2 though? The film and track were released months apart. Admittedly, they had it the other way round with the film coming months before the song had a proper release.

He released the song for the summer because he knew it would be the song of the summer and he was correct. It’s destined to win a Golden Globe not sure if it’ll make it to the Oscars with La La Land, Moana, Sing, Sing Street, Popstar in the mix plus the obscure song attached to a documentary that the Oscars like to nominate

OTOH, Rihanna’s Star Trek Beyond song “Sledgehammer” is definitely NOT eligible; it’s NOT the first cue in the end credits. They made the same mistake Madonna made with W.E.: They put it over the scrolling end credits, but the Academy counts ALL end credits; any song that starts after the VERY FIRST end credit (the director for both STB & W.E.) is ineligible. At least Justin Lin didn’t perform the song he indirectly DQ’d, like Madonna did. 😉

Let’s not forget “Try Everything” from Zootopia. At first glance it’s just another throwaway pop song, but it’s actually well integrated into the film — just what the Music Branch says it’s looking for in BOS nominees. And though Zootopia isn’t your typical Disney Animation film, we all know the power Disney Animation has in BOS (though that could be diminished by Moana, especially with Lin-Manuel Miranda on board).

Try Everything and the Lin-Manuel Miranda song will battle it out for the win.

P!nk will get the Glob nod, Timberlake will win the Globe but not the Oscar.

Is this the original song thread?

Ellie Goulding is back in the race with another one written by Tove Lo: https://youtu.be/pvP_OwVSFpk

Hopefully she can at least get another Globe nomination.

I would be shocked if Lin Manuel Miranda doesn’t win this category.

Between Sing Street, La La Land, and Moana, this category’s going to be a doozy. Even though La La Land is my most anticipated movie and I hope it goes far in every category, I’m rooting for Lin in this. Give that genius an EGOT + Pulitzer.

Any chance for a Florence + The Machine nomination for Wish that You Were Her?

Everyone is forgetting Regina Spektor’s amazing song from Kubo. Definitely a contender.
