We have our huge stars like Nicholson, Pacino, De Niro, Gosling, Tatum and the such. We have Streep, Hathaway and Lawrence.
However, I saw a very good article on Vanity Fair a while ago, where character actors were praised and recognized.
The people on that list were:
(here is the link, in case anyone is interested or if you haven’t seen it yet: http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2012/03/hollywoods-best-character-actors)
My question is this: are these actors finally at the stage where they’ve progressed from “Hey, it’s that guy!” to becoming bona fide stars? I believe so.
Martindale had a full season stint on FX’s Justified, where she became one of the most talked-about actresses of the year. She won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series to the surprise of absolutely no one
Hawkes has already gained an Academy Award nomination, and is one of the frontrunners to possibly win on his second nomination for “The Sessions”
Jenkins received a SAG nomination for “The Visitor” and rode that wave to a surprise Academy Award nomination
Danny Trejo has progressed from being a purely supporting actor to become a star of films where he is the lead
I think it’s time for all these actors to receive their dues. Sure, we have great mainstream actors but they should move aside for these hard-working character actors who surely deserve to be equally successful
I admit I only know a few names of that list….
Margo Martindale is also playing Meryl’s sister in “August:Osage County”, that role won a supporting Tony, so she has a great spotlight next year there, I think. 🙂
Margo Martindale is a total threat to win next year. Her role is amazing, and she is PERFECTLY cast. When A:OC was announced, everyone was screaming for Kathy Bates to play the role, but I knew that the role should have been Margo’s, even before her name was thrown around. Plus, she is incredibly well-liked in the industry and has a great deal of charm. She’s way out ahead already even though filming hasn’t even ended.
