When a nominee’s nomination history is linked to one director—best not to assume the nominee is popular outside of it.

Maybe. But the last two movies he got nominated for also both way over performered, getting into categories that were considered even longer shots than Cooper was. Both times the movies kinda seemed to carry him in, and American Sniper doesn’t seem to have the reviews to do that.

Yep, like others have said those two movies were Russell pics and they both overperformed noms wise. If AS doesn’t have the love they did (which I don’t think it will) I doubt we’ll see Cooper get in, even if this is his most baity role yet.

I disagree that he was “carried in” to the nomination for Silver Linings. He was quite good and it was kind of a weak year. He was the only really other strong candidate next to Day-Lewis. American Hustle you could argue he got swept into a nomination but for SLP he was a strong choice.

Cooper was not number two in that race. He brought the category down along with Hugh Jackman.

The only way I disagree with this comment is that I believe Phoenix deserved the Oscar that year. But I strongly agree that Bradley Cooper deserved the nomination on the credit of his acting ability.

Hugh Jackman was clearly the runner-up in that race. Cooper was 3rd, Phoenix was 4th and Washington was a non-factor all season long (seriously what was he doing there instead of John Hawkes?).

However I don’t think Bradley Cooper rided any kind of coattails for SLP. He was crazy good and had tons of buzz. I don’t know what happened last year with American Hustle but there was passion behind his performance (more so than Adams’s or Bale’s) and even though I hated him during my first watch, his performance grew on me when I saw AH for the second and third time.

In this case I don’t think he has a chance. Eastwood’s days are long gone (thank God).

In my opinion, Cooper doesn’t stand a chance. Not because of his acting skills, but because the Best Actor race is already so packed. I mean there’s Redmayne for Theory Of Everything, Keaton for Birdman, Carell for Foxcatcher, and Cumberbatch for Imitation Game and the fifth slot will more than likely go to Oyelowo for Selma (honestly, I think Gyllenhaal should get a nomination for Nightcrawler, but you can pretty much bank on him getting snubbed).

I just dont see Cooper getting a nomination. He’s a great actor and I love all of his work, but it’s just not happening.

^I am starting to think that Best Actor is less locked up than people are saying. Redmayne and Keaton are certainly frontrunners, but with so much depth in this field, it seems like the kind of category where a huge surprise can happen. I honestly expect precursors being thrown around all over the place, but Redmayne could start to sweep, and if he does, then he’ll finish it off on oscar night. The people who fall in around him will all be worthy, and Cooper could certainly be there if the performance is up to par with the contenders.

Washington was a non-factor all season long (seriously what was he doing there instead of John Hawkes?).

The Academy made sure Washington had his sixth nomination. He can be a non-factor to the rest of you. But the Academy and Hollywood has invested years in making Washington a mainstay of both. Two wins, and six nominations, Washington has something in common with Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Jessica Lange, and not for long Cate Blanchett.

He was never going to win so he was still a non-factor.

Obviously I’m hoping for a surprise nomination for Gael Garcia Bernal – but I get that his work is quiet, without the yelling, screaming and ranting that seems to be considered great “acting”. He is definitely my first choice (so far) for all the awards he is eligible for! (and yes, I know: I’m not predicting him, just saying he’s the best).

As for Bradley Cooper, I have the feeling I will like his performance while disliking his film. I have a gut feeling (after seeing the trailer, which was unusually long) this film is going to be quite divisive. BC has grown enormously as an actor, esp. in SLP. This could be a last minute surprise but there are so many deserving nominees, it’s a crime the academy deson’t open up the category for more nominees for this one year only!

Bradley Cooper was win-worthy in “Silver Linings Playbook.” “American Hustle,” no, not so much for that role. I think he can get in for “American Sniper.” I didn’t realize there was an “underestimating” vibe going on with him this year, even in a somewhat crowded lead actor field (which won’t be so crowded as the Oscar season gets into high gear).
