I recently switched Orignal screenplay to American hustle. Yes her won the Critics choice, WGA, and The golden Globe. But David O Russell has been putting out Oscar nominated films since 2010’s The fighter. And I think is Russel’s time to win an Oscar. Do you think American hustle will win Screenplay?

sunday, tuesday, thursday and saturday I think it’s going to be american hustle

It’s got the O. Russell factor, its a place to reward the movie, I’m not sure the academy is planning on racing to reward Her anything, They clearly loved American Hustle

Monday, wednesday, friday I think it’s Her

It’s clearly a more screenplay driven movie, it’s clever and unique in the pack of nominees, Spike Jonze is a known name, it has picked up essential precursors.

I’m probably 55/45 for American Hustle

No we are not. The only thing that’s being overrated is the nonexistent “Russell factor”.

While American Hustle is really overrated movie, it seems to have support and it will be weird that it loses all 10 nominations. As four starts have been pushing hard and saying great things about DOR that can help him to get votes from actors and win that screenplay if it doesnt and J Law loses supp actress Hustle goes 0/10. I cant imagine that scenario. I think that story about Russell being so great writer/director for his actors can help him to get his first Oscar. It will be undeserving but than, how many times Oscar goes to whats really best in category?

    My take:

    % chance of winning –

    AH 70
    Her 25
    Nebraska 5

This is a case when with one film being the likely winner, those who pick differently afterewards will mostly realize it wasn’t a logical move. I do think Her is stronger than I expected, but this is the obvious go-to spot for AH. Also, Nebraska is going to get a lot of votes to, so Her is not the only anti-AH candidate.

David Owen Russell must curse the day he joined the DGA and was forced, for the first time in his life, to use his middle initial. Other than film credits and awards, he is known as David Russell. He is Russian/Jewish and Italian, not Irish.

HAHAHA   Good catch. I’ll remember that for the future.

There was another David Russell in the DGA, and they forbid double names. Paul Anderson was never known as Paul Thomas Anderson until he joined the DGA. His first film – Hard Eight – listed him as Paul Anderson. But the other Paul Anderson (coincidentally, the director of Pompeii) had already claimed the name (although the latter since has used Paul W.S. Anderson as a credit to avoid any more confusion).

Yeah I’ve confused those two before. When I saw the names Paul Anderson on the poster for Pompeii for a second I said “whaaaaa?”

I see this as an opportunity to reward the overdue David O. Russell. The Academy seems to be very warm towards AH, so why not? Not to mention Russell seems like a very hardworking man and a class act anyways. I honestly didn’t think the screenplay to Her was all that.

Bits of the… less than admirable traits of his past rear their heads around every so often, but I’ll say that he seems a lot better than he was a few years ago.

One earlier confusion was the late 60s and early 70s when two Peter Hunts – the one who directed the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and the other 1776 (known as Peter H. Hunt ultimately).

Then there are the two Australian George Millers – the Mad Max/Witches of Eastwick/Babe/Happy Feet one, then the second who did Man from Snowy River and Phar Lap. The Aussie guild had no rules about two of the same name, and only the first joined the DGA, so both are out there.

And there  was a Michael Moore in the 1960s before the more famous one came along.

^Why didn’t Steve McQueen need a middle initial? Or was the Steve McQueen of the 60’s not in the DGA?

Anyway, Her is winning. I’ve made the point before that multiple screenwriters usually don’t win unless they’re a well-known writing team, and Russell and Singer aren’t a team (Russell extensively re-wrote Singer’s original script). It was with this mindset that I predicted the Precious upset years ago to quite a bit of ridicule. Had Russell writen American Hustle alone I think he would win. Also, Her has win every major screenplay award that it’s been nominated for. Sasha Stone’s “Statgasm” odds chart (primarily odds compiled from historical trends, not the best way to go but still interesting) gives Her a 91.28% chance of winning screenplay.
