I think this looks very promising. I’m much more of a fan of Ben Affleck the director than I am of Ben Affleck the actor, but he’s really started coming into his own as both. I’m looking very forward to this.

Uh-huh. And will it be a wig or a perm for Garber’s Ken Taylor? Or, an elongated cameo…..

Ben really came thisclose with The Town. I remember it was a close fight between The Town and Winter’s Bone among the predictions here last year. And his last two films produced Supporting Acting noms (Amy Ryan, Jeremy Renner). It will not take a long time before the Academy embraces his works in a bigger way.

Perhaps Ben is aiming to be the present-day Costa-Gavras. I’d settle for Warren Beatty or Michael Ritchie.

I had no background knowledge of this “declassified true story” going into the trailer, and the first half-minute made me think that it was going to be a fairly-competent but ultimately standard U.S. covert rescue mission piece… and then the “best bad plan” came up. This looks like it could be a real hoot and a half, the kind of dark backroom comedy that something like, say, Burn After Reading should’ve been. The Town was a good action flick, and I’m glad to see Affleck tackling some more weighty material. I would have never thought of him as a director a few years back, but he clearly has found his footing and then some.

P.S. I’m so freaking glad that Bryan Cranston is getting projects like this one. If I were a director, the guy would be my Johnny Depp or Robert DeNiro. Fantastic.

Ben Affleck completely turned his career around in the past couple years and his directorial efforts have been great, The Town is one of my favorite movies. Argo looks good, it has a great cast so i think there will be some buzz about this film during awards season which would be fantastic. Looking forward to this film

I wouldn’t even go so far as to call them “compentent”… THE TOWN was a horrendously misguided vanity project.

    early reaction to Argo:

@kristapley: Argo is fantastic. The tension is spectacular and it has a great sense of humor. Another step up for Affleck. #telluride

@kristapley: My nails are chewed off. Like I said, tension is spectacular. #Argo #telluride*

@kristapley: Applause in the middle of the movie. Hearing nothing but “wow” and “outstanding” outside the theater. A big hit. #argo

@akstanwyck: #Telluride2012 rousing applause for ben affleck’s “Argo.” it resonates. Well timed Mideast drama with CIA heroes.

@HitFixGregory: Ben Affleck pulls off the tough task of making a serious, taunt and funny thriller. Fantastic ensemble. Arkin steals. #Argo #Telluride

@slashfilm: Argo is a near-brilliant nail-biting thriller. Fantastic performances/prod design. Ben Affleck’a smartest film yet as director.

@HitFixGregory: Ben Affleck pulls off the tough task of making a serious, taunt and funny thriller. Fantastic ensemble. Arkin steals. #Argo #Telluride

@RoseKuo: First screening of Telluride: ARGO is terrific!

    @gort2: Telluride has its first hit…Ben Affleck’s “Argo” delivers…big time! #telluride #tff39

@erickohn: ARGO: Entertaining combo of political intrigue/Hollywood satire. Alan Arkin/J. Goodman steal show. A crowdpleasing WAG THE DOG. #Telluride

@EricDSnider: ARGO: terrific, smart, grown-up entertainment. Affleck is a real live director. Top 10 of the year so far for me. #telluride

@MarlowNYC: Ben Affleck’s ARGO is a very solid thriller with some ace lensing by DP and a very slick first 20 mins. #Telluride2012

@wellshwood: “Argo,” Iran hostage-escape drama set in ’80, is smart & absorbing for first two-thirds, but the suspenseful final third is what sells it.

@chhabs: #BenAffleck’s #Argo, well directed edge-of-the-seat thriller during the #IranHostageCrisis. But the politics of the film are so bad! #TFF12

@chhabs: #Argo opens well, history of #America with #Iran, but the rest of film shows the #Iranians as evil villains, #Americans all innocent. #TFF12

Oscar #2 for Alan Arkin? We’ll see…. Doesn’t seem like Bryan Cranston is the shining supporting star he was once suspected of being, if these early reactions are to be believed.

I really want Cranston to get an Oscar nomination. But maybe that’s just the Breaking Bad fan in me talking.
