I know some might be getting tired of the many threads that I create. I just want to show love to everyone. Over the years, the Academy Awards have constantly ignored Asian actors, women especially. I’d love for us to discuss our favorite performances by Asian or Asian descent actresses in film. Whether the performances were overlooked, had bad timing, were snubbed, or simply performances that you truly love. Some of my favorite actresses are Asian. Maggie Cheung is the Queen of Asian Cinema in my personal opinion. Zhang Ziyi should have had at least 2 Oscar nominations by now. She is so gifted. The year 2000 was such an incredible year for Asian/Asian descent actress. Maggie Cheung (In The Mood), Michelle Yeoh/Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger). All 3 women would have been Oscar nominees if it was up to me.
(I’m not sure if Bjork has Asian ancestry or not)
I also want to touch on this years snub. Hong Chau. I have not seen the film, but I was expecting her to be nominated based on the previous nominations she has earned.
On the flip side, the Asian film market is looking to maybe pass North America soon. Films in China are now grossing domestically, similar numbers to USA/CAN. I can’t forget Bollywood also. There is a huge market for Asian actresses in Asia. I just hope that the Asian Americans will get more opportunity to show themselves in Film. I see all races in Television, and they are doing very well.
Who are some of your favorite Asian/Asian Descent actresses? Your favorite performances? Who was overlooked or snubbed at the Oscars? Who do you think will get nominated in the future?
