We recently moved to Austin, Texas from the UK. Today there was a TV news report about a number of Austin people whose films are in the Oscar race. I was surprised how many filmmakers live here. I knew Terrence Malick lives and works here – don’t think “To the Wonder” will get too far in the Oscars though. Next year he will have a film with Fassy, Gosling, Blanchett, Portman, etc. which was filmed in Austin early this year.

    The other Austinites:

    Jeff Nichols – Mud
Richard Linklater  and Ethan Hawke – Before Midnight
John Lee Hancock – Saving Mr. Banks (he seems to be mainly a screenwriter though, he wrote Snow White and the Huntsman and the upcoming Maleficient)
    Matthew McConaughey and Sandra Bullock

Anybody know why there are so many filmmakers out here? Strange – I wasn’t aware of this.

It seems to be a fairly artsy city and hes become kind of the go to place for independent film makers who don’t want to deal with the big studies in L.A. but still want to be around other filmmakers. Richard Linklater also founded the Austin Film Society with his frequent DP, which I think is part of what helped the city get this reputation
