Saw this film last night. I LOVED it. Ansel Elgort is FANTASTIC in the lead role as Baby! So charming and smooth but not in a cocky or hammy way, it is a real star making turn from him. It is that for Lily James as well. She owns her scenes, and the two of them together are dynamite. The laundrette scene just simmers with the perfect mix of passion and love. The supporting cast are all terrific too. There is no single weak link. Hamm is my favourite of the bunch, just for going relatively against type – a big step up from the douchebag role in Bridesmaids. Kevin Spacey is great as the ringmaster of the group, balancing his menace with his genuine admiration for Baby. The script is lean, whip smart, full of mini Easter eggs which are a real treat for viewers. His direction of the action scenes are a real crowd pleaser, it never becomes stale, unlike other films with car chases and heists at their core. Wrights direction, story and his actors always make it feel fresh. The soundtrack is just full on genius. It never feels gimmicky, every song fits every scene and shot – there isn’t a musical note out of place. I cannot recommend this film enough. It isn’t an awards friendly film – but that says more about awards bodies than it does about this film. It is my clear favourite of the year so far – 5 Stars (First of the year from me!).

Would it be something for the Golden Globes to like at the most?

Yes, Globes at most is what I realistically imagine happening. Though it *could* hit where Deadpool did last year, depending on the amount of Oscar baity competition.

The film’s actually great. I mean it’s Edgar Wright, so you know it’s gonna be that. A sure contender for Golden Globe Musical/Comedy for sure!

And wow at Ansel Elgort slated to play young JFK in an upcoming movie Mayday 109 and he’s producing it as well, I’m having mixed feelings about all of it though.

I guess this is going to be one of those films that happens every year that everyone adores and that I don’t gt at all. I was really excited. I LOVE Shaun, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and The Wold End I thought was good.

Imagine my surprise when I found myself dare I say hating the film. Wright’s films are usually filled with style but they always have a great emotional core at the center. For me I just didn’t connect with anything which means all the cool stuff got stale for me after 15 minutes. I mean I like Lilly Collins but there was nothing to that character and I couldn’t care less about the romance. I just found this whole film aggravatingly dull.

Still I love Wright and want him to make movies forever so I hope this does well.

It’s good. Elgort is terrific. Perhaps too much of the film is spent setting up the story but the pay-off is worth it.

I had an awful morning today, and then I went to see this film. And it was everything I could have ever hoped for and so much more. Wright’s directing was spot on. The soundtrack fit the movie like a glove. And the acting was nearly perfect. Elgort was incredible and proved his ability as an actor. Spacey, Foxx, and Hamm all gave captivating supporting performances that took the film to the next level. And Lily James shined, especially in the final part of the film. Incredible film that made my day infinetly better.

Wait, would you consider it a comedy or a musical? Because it wasn’t super funny and had no original music.

Wow, I really didn’t have any expectations for this movie. Other than Scott Pilgrim being something I can watch over and over again, the only reason I went to see this was because I thought the trailer looked kinda cool. But I was still thinking “meh, I’ll just see it if I’m bored Sunday” sooo I see it and.. I’m blown away. Five minutes in, I was already like “okay this is amazing” then it just got better and better. Everyone here has accurately covered how spectacular everything was from the acting to the music to the direction and overall visual style, oh my god. Really wasn’t expecting to like this all that much, but I freaking loved it. So much that (this is a little premature but as of now) it’ll take a lot to dethrone Baby Driver as my favorite movie of the year. I know that’s a bold statement to make already (and I’m sure something will eventually come along) haha but as of now, I am in love.

    A. Ansel kills it. Screenplay is not original, but delivered terrifically. Great night-time shots. Never seen Hamm better (I don’t like his work, but I sure did here).

    Highly recommended.

I had a more mixed reaction that most on this site. I expected to be blown away based on the reviews but I liked rather than loved the film. The relationships between Baby and his waitress lady-love and with his deaf, wheelchair bound foster father were too soft and syrupy for my taste, and contrasted too sharply with the nasty crime elements. It was Snow White and Prince Charming fairy tale time. Also, the inherent artificiality of basically the whole thing kept me at arms length. That being said the film delivers on the action front and has award worthy photography and editing. As a technical piece it works like gangbusters and the final confrontation in a parking garage is the stuff movie dreams are made of. See it for the eye candy but the human element was lacking.

I avoided the reviews. Loved his step-father…”I wasn’t talking about
    me”
