Was just watching Beatrice Straight winning her Oscar for Network on youtube……..there seemed to be no frontrunner as the unnominated Katherine Ross won the Golden Globe for Voyage of the Damned .  Wondering who is any opinions or remembrances of that particular category in that year…..
    My ranking would be:
    Beatrice Straight, Network
    Piper Laurie, Carrie
    Jodie Foster, Taxi Driver
…….and I just don’t remember much about the other two Lee Grant (Voyage of the Damned) and Jane Alexander (All the President’s Men) since it has been awhile since I saw the films.

All 5 had no real buzz.
less precursors back in the 70’s  thank Goodness..
Laurie had the experience edge having beeen nommed
as lead actress for THE HUSTLER..
I dont understand the STRAIGHT love…its a hammy
over the top small performance but NETWORK  shouldve
won more awards anyway…so having 3 acting awards puts
it in a special class…while the academy chose the dreadful
    Rocky as best picture..

In retrospect it seems fitting the majority would vote for Straight.

Laurie – crazy horror movie charcters is minus points
Foster – real teenager playing a teenage prostitute in an ultra violent film is minus point…
Grant – won the year before (and this nomination was in a hugely melodramatic account of a horrible page in history)
Alexander – as a great an actress as she is, it’s a pretty forgetable performance – while Straight’s was very oscar friendly as far a big emotional impact…

I have no problem with Straight’s win. A great performance.

Ive only seen CARRIE, NETWORK, and TAXI DRIVER so I can’t speak for Grant or Alexander, but out of those three I’m prefectly fine with Straight winning. Foster was perfectly good but I’ve never really gotten to the raves her performance has gotten so she’d be third. I probably would have given my vote to Laurie who was phenomenal in Carrie, but I couldn’t really expect this type of performance to get a win so Straight is a perfectly good alternative. She killed it in her big scene and if anyone had to have the record for shortest winning performance I’m glad it’s her

Lol! Well, he was an actor(sortof) turned director, one of their own, who made an inspiring albeit nothing new film on a shoe-string. It’s enjoyable enough and made so many careers.
Network’s screenplay from the o-so-brilliant Paddy Chayefsky is even more relevant today, pointing out things that some (idiots) dont want to hear. That probably didnt help. But O yes; that choice of Rocky over Network stands the test of time as one of the most memorable wtf moments in Oscar’s history.
Btw, Rocky is simple and jejune, but I dont think it’s dreadful.

Piper was a force in Carrie. She should have won.

I haven’t seen Voyage but I don’t think that Grant would’ve won a second Oscar in a row (although Robards would do it the following year…different scenarios I know).

I think Laurie should’ve won. Easily. Ruth Gordon won for a sort of horror, scary, movie, so why not Laurie?

I love Network, I think Straight gave a great performance in that short time, but I have to agree that looking how idiotic it was to vote for Rocky as Best Picture, it’s a plus that Network can now say it has 3 acting Oscars and have its place in history.

In Piper Laurie’s biography she says she kind of thought she’d win and that was what people were telling her. She was a previous nominee who returned after a long absense. BUT I’m guessing the horror genre really did her in….plus Straight was an acclaimed Shakesperean stage actress and probably got the New York theatre crowd vote.

Laurie definitely seems like the obvious winner.

My vote would have gone to Foster.

Straight’s win is one of the strangest in Oscar history. I can think of no rational explanation at all.

i only had seen straight, laurie and foster though, and the three of them are abviously the frontrunners
    3) foster, it’d just be so controversial to let a teenage actress to win in a prostitute role
    2) laurie, she’s perfection in that movie, but it’s a horror movie, so she didn’t have any chance (and though gordon won for rosemary’s baby which is a horror movie, she still got the overdue vote)
    1) straight, in a movie with so many great acting, she, in a tiny small role, is outstanding, the role of a betrayed faithful wife, full of rage yet forgiving, all in a scene is just perfect for oscar voters

I rewatched the scene yesterday. Straight unleashes a lifetime of pent-up pain and goes through an entire character arc in five minutes. Pretty astounding. I think she benefitted from the circumstance of her competetion (it was a favorable pool for this particular performance to be compared in) but it’s still a deserved win.

Talia Shire won NYFC, NBR and finished second in the NSFC voting. I think if she had went for/been placed in Supporting instead of lead, she would have easily sailed away with the win.

I always thought that the Best Picture win of Rocky over Network was much like the Best Picture win of Chariots of Fire over Reds.

Both winning films has an immediately iconic piece of music beautifully edited into a triumphant moment. I think Oscar voters are swayed by such emotional grandstanding over a thoughtful piece of filmmaking that requires one’s attention.

I often wondered as well if the Network loss had something to do with the Academy’s lingering bias against films set in the world of television. In addition to that one, Broadcast News, Tootsie and Quiz Show got some love, but didn’t do as well as they might have.
