Release Oct 12 2018 by Amazon Studios

From the producers of Tree of Life, 12 Years a Slave, Selma, The Big Short, Moonlight, (and Backseat & Ad Astra)

Director : Felix Van Groeningen (The Broken Circle Breakdown)

Screenplay : Felix Van Groeningen, Luke Davies (Lion)

Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son David (Steve Carell) and Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet), which chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with meth addiction over many years. The film also stars Maura Tierney, Amy Ryan and Timothy Hutton.

    First still:

Amazed there isn’t a thread for this movie yet. Movie screams PSA Oscar campaign incoming about alcohol rehabilitation and recovery.

    Thoughts?

I just want to love Beautiful Boy because I want a Timothee Chalamet vehicle I can feel comfortable in recommending to other people. I liked him in Lady Bird, but he was more a part of a really good ensemble than the film being HIS. I think he is a very talented performer, but I want to see him be given material to really shine in a film I don’t feel guilty about enjoying. Imagine him playing a drug addict, the layers and raw emotional range he could show!

What are the odds Chalamet gets downgraded to Supporting so that he won’t have to compete with Steve Carell in Lead? Just a thought.

The novel is told from Carell’s character’s pov so most likely Chalamet will be supporting.

That’s exactly what I guessed. At least Timothee won’t be having to compete with Lucas Hedges in Lead for Boy Erased. How cool would it be if 2 relatively younger actors were recognized in the same Oscars year for films ironically both having the word “Boy” in the title? Hedges is a really great talent as well, anyone who has seen him in Manchester by the Sea ought to know that. I also loved him in Lady Bird (also starring T-Chal) and in Moonrise Kingdom.

While I’m fine with younger female actors getting rewarded it rubs me the wrong way to rarely see younger male actors rewarded by the Oscars in Lead categories. If the performances do turn out to be genuinely worthy then why should it make a difference what gender they are or what age they are, you know what I mean?

Also, if Saoirse Ronan wins Lead Actress for Mary, Queen of Scots along with Hedges in Lead and Chalamet in Supporting then 3 Lady Bird cast members will have won Oscars in the same freaking year. Laurie Metcalf would have to be just a little jealous if that happened LOL!

That may no longer be true. The original adaptation by Cameron Crowe used David Sheff’s Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction as source material.

That script was scrapped for a new adaptation by Lion scribe Luke Davies who used not only the father’s memoir but Nic Scheff’s memoir Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines as well.

Advanced screenings have taken place and the rough cut has been brought back for further work. We must still wait and see where Carrell and Chalamet will finally land for category placement.

So hoping they can make this movie into something special. Such an important message to be told. I just began reading the book. The book is written by the father and told through his eyes. It will be interesting to see if Timothee will be supporting or possibly lead.

Carell and Ryan, together again at last!

I’m all for Oscar buzz for this entire cast, sight unseen.

I believe that Oscar voters will reward Timothee next year if he is deserving. He seems like a Veteran already. I feel the same goes for Lucas Hedges.

I hope so but I don’t think it will happen this soon. Rumor has it that he’s very good in Beautiful Boy but the movie needs major editing because the plot seems to be very confusing. His convincing performance alone won’t be enough to garner him a nomination much less a win.

I want this to be good so badly, but I’m hesitant because of the early word. Nonetheless, still hoping for this best so that Timmy could further show off his talents. I honestly think he has a special career ahead of him. Carell, on the other hand, I think has a better chance with the Cheney movie to be his ticket to the Oscars than this.

I hope it all works out in the end. I want it to be good, great really! But people have won awards for work in films that have not been considered great!

I think Chalamet will get his Oscar long before Hedges. He’s thirstier.
