Fassbender for the win this year with what was one of my favorite male performances of the decade. My personal lineup was:

    Jean Dujardin, The Artist
    Michael Fassbender, Shame (*)
    Ryan Gosling, Drive
    Brad Pitt, Moneyball
    Michael Shannon, Take Shelter

Fassbender, though I enjoy Oldman and Pitt as well.

Well, I truly disliked Fassbender and Shame in general, for that matter…one of the few times where I felt Mulligan isn’t miscast. She’s a stand out.
Dujardin is a pretty good tap dancer.
I adore Gary Oldman but for me, all he does is crinkle his forehead; although he does raise his voice once.
Brad and George are both fabulous in their roles and in their own ways.

My choice then and now is Demian Bichir. He captivated me in what could have been just another mediocre film.

Props to Ewan McGregor in Beginners. He’s terrific and each time out.

Back in 2011 I probably would’ve voted for Fassbender. Now I go for Dujardin, whom internet fanboys seem to have a vendetta against for having the nerve to beat Clooney and Pitt, but I find him irresistible in The Artist. I’m not sure there’s a single other actor alive today who could have pulled off a silent movie star performance with the lightness of touch that Dujardin achieved. It’s uncanny. Every comic and melodramatic expression is pitched just right, whereas with another actor everything might have been disastrously overdone to the point of parody. Dujardin is possibly my favourite Lead Actor Oscar winner this decade so far.

Jean Dujardin! I hate the backlash he has gotten over the year his performance is phenomenal. Clooney is a close second because he is also phenomenal in Descendants. Missing though is Joseph Gordon Levitt in 50/50. Heartbreaking, dry but humorous, and charming

Fassbender, no doubt. My nominees that year:
    Demian Bichir (A Better Life)
    Adrien Brody (Detachment)
    George Clooney (The Descendants)
    Jean Dujardin (The Artist)
    Michael Fassbender (Shame)
    Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code)
    Brad Pitt (Moneyball)

I had seven nominees, if I had to narrow them down to five, the likeliest omissions would be Gyllenhaal and Brody, which means the Oscar nominees for 2011 were apparently very deserving (by looking at everyone’s personal ballots).

George Clooney in The Descendants, followed closely by Asa Butterfield in Hugo and Jean Dujardin in The Artist.

Oh God, I forgot about Adrien Brody. I love Detachment so much.
