This particular category in this particular year was so intriguing. So many worthy actresses with wonderful roles and many of them were snubbed. Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, Tilda Swinton, Elizabeth Olsen, Kirsten Dunst, Rooney Mara, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams, Berenice Bejo (if you consider her role a lead one despite being campigned in supporting), among others. Only five slots. Who would’ve made the line-up in your opinion and why?

Extremely weak category, especially since we had been so spoiled by that glorious 2010 roster.

Out of the 2011 nominees Viola would be the only one making my top 5, and even she may be missing out if I think too hard. Off the top of my head Tilda Swinton, Kirsten Dunst, Juliette Binoche and the leading lady from Poetry are all leagues above that weak-ass lineup.

I LOVED The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (huge Fincher fan here), and I’m excited for Rooney’s career but she’s just serviceable in that role. Don’t get me wrong, she nails it, but there’s not much to that character to begin with, at least in this book.

Streep is good in The Iron Lady but… I’m not going there today.

Close and Michelle are completely forgettable. If I weren’t such a movie geek I would have already forgotten about these performances and the fact that they were nominated for Best Actress.

Tilda and Juliette were my personal picks that year.

    Oscar lineup:

    1. Meryl Streep: Stunning, a 100% deserving winner.
    2. Michelle Williams: Strong runner-up, a deserving nominee.
    3. Roney Mara: Great, a deserving nominee.
    4. Viola Davis: Overrated as hell.
    5. Glenn Close: Just terrible. Awful.

    My lineup
    1. Tilda Swinton
    2. Meryl Streep
    3. Charlize Theron
    4. Michelle Williams
    5. Elizabeth Olsen

I rewatched Young Adult yesterday and god, was Charlize Theron just wonderful… Shameful snub but I guess there isn’t room for everybody with just five slots.

Yes Charlize gave a much more interesting performance than Rooney and Glenn and I’d even argue Streep.

I would have given Theron the spot over Mara (I haven’t seen Close or Streep)

    Of the nominees:
    1. Meryl Streep
    2. Rooney Mara
    3. Glenn Close
    4. Viola Davis (this was a supporting performance)
    5. Michelle Williams (capable of so much more than what she put on here, Branagh out-acted her)

    Personal lineup:
    1. Tilda Swinton
    2. Charlize Theron
    3. Meryl Streep
    4. Rooney Mara
    5. Glenn Close

I have yet to see Melancholia.

Was Kirsten Dunst robbed because of the Lars Von Trier pro-nazi comments in Cannes? Her performance was pure perfection, so disturbing and out of this planet. I find it hard to believe that a voter would choose Michelle Williams over her but we all know other factors were involved and none of them are performance-related.

Oh my Ghandi, yes! Dunst! Such a crime. I never saw anything of hers that I found remotely good, let alone striking. I actually wish she would have won with that performance in Melancholia.
