Thought it would be cool to do this with all the acting categories, not just Best Actor.

Before I give my list I’d like to make note that none of these are personal preferences and I feel that quite a few of these performances listed here don’t deserve to be as high as second place.

    2012 – Emmanuelle Riva
2011 – Viola Davis (maybe a lot of sympathy votes for Glenn Close)
    2010 – Annette Bening
    2009 – Meryl Streep
    2008 – Meryl Streep
    2007 – Ellen Page
2006 – way too close to call (iconic Streep role, Winslet’s second-best to date, Dench absolutely stunning, Cruz excellent)
    2005 – Felicity Huffman
2004 – another close call (Bening and Staunton overdue and worthy, Winslet’s best to date, passion for Sandino Moreno)
2003 – Diane Keaton (honestly wouldn’t surprise me if Theron got 100%)
    2002 – Renee Zellweger
    2001 – Sissy Spacek
    2000 – Ellen Burstyn
    1999 – Annette Bening
    1998 – Cate Blanchett
    1997 – Judi Dench
    1996 – Brenda Blethyn
    1995 – Meryl Streep
    1994 – Jodie Foster
    1993 – Angela Bassett
    1992 – Susan Sarandon
1991 – either Thelma or Louise
    1990 – Anjelica Huston

Superb. Only started watching the Oscars in 2007, so I’m not sure how these races played out all the way through, but…

    2012: Emmanuelle Riva
    2011: Viola Davis
    2010: Annette Bening
    2009: Meryl Streep
2008: Meryl Streep (or Anne Hathaway)
    2007: Julie Christie
2006: … Meryl Streep? (I assume it’d be either her or Judi Dench)
    2005: Felicity Huffman
2004: Annette Bening (or Imelda Staunton)
2003: Diane Keaton (or Naomi Watts)
2002: Renee Zellwegger (or Julianne Moore)
2001: Sissy Spacek (or Nicole Kidman, though she didn’t get a SAG nom)
    2000: Ellen Burstyn
    1999: Annette Bening
    1998: Cate Blanchett
    1997: Judi Dench
1996: Brenda Blethyn (based on the Golden Globe win. Then again, maybe the Weinsteins could’ve helped Scott Thomas)
    1995: Elisabeth Shue
    1994: Jodie Foster
    1993: Angela Bassett
    1992: Susan Sarandon
    1991: Susan Sarandon
    1990: Anjelica Huston
    1989: Michelle Pfeiffer
    1988: Glenn Close
    1987: Glenn Close
    1986: Kathleen Turner
    1985: Whoopi Goldberg
    1984: Judy Davis
1983: Meryl Streep (or Debra Winger)

    The moral of the story?

Annette Bening: Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

Seems to be a trend every 5 or 6 years. Can’t wait to see what she does in 2015.

Pretty sure Watts was second place in 2003 to Theron. Not Keaton, Watts won most of the big critic awards over Theron.

And Staunton was second to Swank in 2004, not Bening.

And Staunton was second to Swank in 2004, not Bening.

In both cases, you are picking the critical favorite over the major televised precursor winners, which unfortunately matters more.

I think Sissy Spacek was a strong third behind Nicole Kidman. Remember we’re talking about MAJOR publicity and media attention Kidman was getting from the Tom Cruise divorce, her Golden Globe win and awards attention Moulin Rouge! was getting. And she was peeking at just the right time that Halle Berry was. Spacek may have won the Drama Globe and critics, but her buzz had wore down by the time Oscar night was coming.
