In my opinion this is such an incredibly strong line up, throw in Cameron for Terminator 2 and the Coens for Barton Fink and we could have had one of the best line ups ever. For me though its between Stone and Demme, SOTL is brilliantly directed giving credibility to horror films, with compelling characters and excellent storytelling. I actually prefer SOTL as a movie to JFK, but Stone’s direction is just astonishing, visually its astounding how Stone was able to bring these images to life.

Demme. “Silence” is one of my all-time favorites and I think Demme’s directing is a big part of that.

Easily Jonathan Demme for me. I would definitely rank James Cameron and the Coens very highly as well.

I voted for John Singleton. A twenty-something at the time, who imo, made a brilliant debut film.

I’m still hoping he gets back to where he began. Right at the top of film making.

Demme did the best job..but Streisand should have been nominated for  THE PRINCE OF TIDES..

Demme is my choice, great lineup…though I never thought BUGSY was all that great.  BARTON FINK should have gotten that spot.

I wouldn’t have minded Streisand in the mix, except her downfall was having herself in the cast.  She gave an OK performance, but IMO she distracted herself from her directorial duties…I agree withe the critic who said she lit herself as if it were the 2nd coming. YENTL for sure should have gotten her a director and actress nod.

I agree. This category needed Joel Coen for ‘Barton Fink’.

    I mean… Barry Levinson? WTF?

I think as time has gone on Bugsy has become underrated. It’s not a great movie, but I think it’s better than the somwhat comparable Casino. Demme deserved his Oscar.
