Sorry if there’s another Documentary thread out there. I’ve been having trouble finding it.

Anyway, just found out that the Academy has narrowed down it’s Documentary selections to the 15 semi-finalists. Looking them over, I’m pretty excited. There don’t seem to be too many big goofs. At the very least, Citizenfour and Life Itself are still likely in play for the win. This could end up a pretty great year for the category.

    The shortlist:

“Art and Craft,” Purple Parrot Films
“The Case against 8,” Day in Court
    “Citizen Koch,” Elsewhere Films
    “CitizenFour,” Praxis Films
    “Finding Vivian Maier,” Ravine Pictures
“The Internet’s Own Boy,” Luminant Media
    “Jodorowsky’s Dune,” City Film
“Keep On Keepin’ On,” Absolute Clay Productions
    “The Kill Team,” f/8 filmworks
“Last Days in Vietnam,” Moxie Firecracker Films
“Life Itself,” Kartemquin Films and Film Rites
“The Overnighters,” Mile End Films West
“The Salt of the Earth,” Decia Films
“Tales of the Grim Sleeper,” Lafayette Film
    “Virunga,” Grain Media

My early prediction is that it will be Citizenfour, Life Itself, Jodorowsky’s Dune, Virunga, and Finding Vivian Maier.

I’m surprised the Elaine Stritch doc didn’t crack the list. No Glen Campbell either.

^Reminds me of the ‘Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work’ snub.

I loved Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me, but not too surprised by the snub.

Hoping Citizenfour, Citizen Koch, Life Itself and Virunga make it to the final five. Not sure about the fifth slot.

At least it won’t be another fiasco like last year when that feel good documentary won over some really important documentaries that were radical in their politics.

Win Wenders has another shot for documentary for The Salt of the Earth. (I will love to)

i think the nominees will be something like

    – Keep on Keepin´on (musical doc has a good record here)
    – The Kill Team (ditto for those about war)
    – The Case Against 8
    – Last Days in Vietnam
    – Virunga

Awwww I really wanted Elaine to be nominated. That was such a great doc. Nice to see The Internet’s Own Boy in the mix

Saw CITIZENFOUR today and really really liked it. It’s really really good but I want to see Life Itself before saying if it is going to win or not. Life Itself will be airing on CNN in Jan so that looks like when I will finally get to see it.

I just saw it (they’re showing it again as I’m typing this), all I have to say is I hope it does get nominated it really deserves to and even win. I loved every minute of it.

Yeah, this is my second or third time watching it, and I was so moved again that I put it back in my Top 10 list. The bits recounting Gene’s final months had me in tears.
