So, the Academy announced the first shortlist of next year’s awards. They usually announce Short Film in November and Makeup and Visual FX in December.

    Who’s getting nominated/winning here?

The only thread I could find, so am bumping it up now that we have a full nomination slate.

I just got back from seeing them all and it’s pretty obvious by their predictions that none of the GD Experts have.  For now, suffice it to say that death is a specter that hovers over four of them, and they all deal with very heavy, even heart-breaking, issues.  There’s also not a bad one in the bunch, though one is conspicuously more by-the-numbers than the others, which tend to be either much more deeply personal or far more stylistically abstract.

But one also is suffused with joy and wonder, and it earns its smiles in wholly unsentimental ways.  That’s my pick not only as my favorite, but as the winner, too.

My theater only plays the other shorts. Never the Doc shorts 🙁 . But Crisis Hotline is on HBO Go and I watched that and loved it

It is unquestionably a powerful film.  But it’s also the one that feels most like a PSA, and while the other films immerse themselves in the power and emotion of their subjects directly, CRISIS (out of necessity and discretion) still holds that suffering and emotion at arms-length.  Hearing the other end of these phone calls is powerful, but not nearly as much (IMHO) than experiencing the drama firsthand, which all the other films do.  Two of those are like tone poems, two are like autobiography, and this one feels like journalism–exceptionally well-crafted, but without the same level of intimacy.
