I am not sure if this is good enough or essential enough to merit an award, but if you want to, PM me with your suggestions on the Best Characters of 2013.

Personally, I think that characters are just as important as the actors that play them. They have to be just right to serve the story that they need. They need to be likeable, even if they are still dickish. They need to be people you can root for when times are dire. They need to last enough of an impression on you that you are still thinking about them long after the credits end. For those reasons, I feel it is important to acknowledge them in some way, shape or form at the end of the year. The categories are:

    Best Primary Character – Drama
    Best Primary Character – Comedy
    Best Hero

    • Not necessarily “superheroes”, but any character from a film that does enough heroic acts to qualify as a quote-unquote “hero”. Male or female are welcome.

    Best Villain
    Best Supporting Character
    Best Sidekick
    Best Animated Character

I may add more categories, or omit them if you feel that I need to do so.

I like the OP, but I find the categories too limiting. I’ll list my favorite characters of the year in alphabetical order:

    – Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill/The Wolf of Wall Street)
    – Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio/The Wolf of Wall Street)
    – Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac/Inside Llewyn Davis)
    – Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender/12 Years a Slave)
    – Jasmine Francis (Blue Jasmine)
    – Nikki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl/Rush)
    – Philomena Lee (Judi Dench/Philomena)
    – Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor/12 Years a Slave)
    – Samantha OS (Scarlett Johansson/Her)
    – Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale/American Hustle)
    – Smaug the Dragon (Benedict Cumberbatch/The Hobbit…)

But my number one favorite character of the year is Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix/Her).
