As a an avid composer, player, listener, and lover of music, the Original Score category is one of my favorites at the Oscars. Since the category is not yet open to predict, let’s discuss the potential nominees and our personal favorites so far!

    My predicted nominees:
John Williams – Star Wars: The Force Awakens
    Carter Burwell – Carol
Alexandre Desplat – The Danish Girl
    Michael Giacchino – Inside Out
Ennio Morricone – The Hateful Eight

I think Williams will win this year. The Star Wars films always bring out the best in him, and he hasn’t won since Schindler’s List in 1993.

I haven’t seen Carol, but I have heard a pretty big portion of its score online, and I was really impressed. It has a lot of depth and is very emotional, and comes from a very critically loved film. It would probably be the safest bet.

Alexandre Desplat is the best composer working today, and is a perennial nominee. People who have seen it say The Danish Girl has a beautiful score, and even if the film disappoints in other categories, it will almost undoubtedly sneak in here.

Inside Out continues Giacchino’s and Pixar’s streak of amazing collaborations. He won for Up and was nominated for Ratatouille, and Inside Out’s score is just as good as the latter. If the Academy truly votes for the best of the best, then from what I’ve seen so far, Inside Out should make it in.

Ennio Morricone returning to score a western just screams Oscar, does it not? I’ve never really been a huge fan of his work, but the Academy has, and him teaming up with Tarrantino is a no-brainer.

My favorite scores of the year (so far and in order):
    Daniel Pemberton – Steve Jobs
Junkie XL – Black Mass and Mad Max: Fury Road
Dan Romer – Beasts of No Nation
    Michael Giacchino – Inside Out
    Harry Gregson-Williams – The Martian

    Overrated Oscar-contending scores:
Thomas Newman – Bridge of Spies
    Johann Johannson – Sicario

FYC: Southpaw. Give James Horner one last nomination.

Hunter Logan…….. I agree with most of your choices but I’d include Thomas Newman for Bridge of Spies and the score for The Martian. I do think Williams might be the winner although 1 of his 5 oscars came in 1977 for Star Wars. Newman could finally win as well.

    My current predictions:

    Bridge of Spies
    The Hateful Eight
    Inside Out
    Sicario
    Star Wars: The Force Awakens

My favorite of the year so far is It Follows. But we all know how the Academy is with horror.

Bridge of Spies (agreed that it isn’t Newman’s best, but I think he’s still in)
    Carol
    The Danish Girl
    The Hateful Eight
    Star Wars: The Force Awakens

It’ll be a travesty if Burwell doesn’t get in, but he’s hired a publicist for the first time so it seems like he’s actively seeking it this time and composers know how overdue he is in spite of facile comparisons of the score to Glass.
