I would love to see The Star!
Yeah, that’s not happening. A tepid song from an inconsequential movie performed by a washed up star with very little buzz does not amount to an Oscar. Mariah doesn’t have the same respect, particularly with the Oscars, as someone like Celine Dion, who has already performed 2 iconic Oscar winners and has 2 other Oscar nominated songs, and has performed a total 6 times at the ceremony, the most of any singer.
Call Me By Your Name and Beauty and the Beast are certain nominees. The thing with BatB is whether Evermore or HDAMLF gets nominated. On one hand, Evermore is the bigger song, but the pedigree Celine Dion brings, and the nostalgia factor, can be a huge pull for that song. Besides, someone like Celine performing would be great.
Your Celine Dion bias is showing. Dion has been used as a stunt performer at the Oscars for years because she’s the most reliably bourgeois insipid musical interpreter of all the grand(er) divas (can’t imagine the Oscar uppers wanting Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey gospel-izing humdrum movie music in live real time). And since time hasn’t been kind to the reputation of Titanic, and least of all My Heart Will Go On, I really don’t think Dion has much clout in the selection of the nominees. Will likely be the Disney behemoth names of Menken and Rice pulling in votes. But of the two Beauty and the Beast song contenders, I’m hoping HDAMLF gets in over the other. Evermore REALLY made me cringe in the theatre.

As for The Star, it’s warm, cute, inspirational/spiritual, sappy and nostalgic in an 80’s Star Search performance kind of way. An advantage for Carey as a good addition to her ubiquitous Christmas repertoire. And one of the advantages of a win would be that co-writer Marc Shaiman would be the newest (and most deserving) entry in the EGOT group.December 7, 2017 at 2:02 pm #1202432573because everybody is tired of Disney dominating Original song and Animated Feature almost every time they put out something. Also Sufjan is overdue for some industry awards TBH
Everybody except the Academy, that is. If Pixar can win for two songs that were essentially forgettable closing credit fodder, they certainly can for a film where the song plays an essential part of the story the way it does in COCO. I’m not even a particular fan of the film, but the film’s emotional climax is the performance of this song, tying up all the themes in one big tissue-friendly package. Given that it’s a near certainty to win Animated Feature too, it has to be considered the front-runner right now.

Sufjan, Lopez, Warren, Pasek&Paul and Menken.

One of the BFCA nominees always misses at the Oscars.

The Greatest Showman, not the 1952 Oscar Winning film The Greatest Show on Earth
Mystery of Love, not the 1990 Mariah Carey debut single Vision of LoveDecember 10, 2017 at 2:31 pm #1202435486The Fifty Shades T-Swift tune is totally earning a Globe nom.

No way. No way am I sitting through another Fifty Shades movie.
ReplyCopy URLDecember 10, 2017 at 2:46 pm #1202435502I really don’t want to see “Stand Up For Something” nominated. Its WAY too much Oscar-bait, too similar to previous Oscar winner “Glory”, the song is coming from a movie that bombed at the box office, its not a song that necessarily contributes to the movie it comes from, it is annoyingly being used currently as a theme song on CNN (which is probably where most people have heard it) and by no means is THIS the song that should finally win Diane Warren the Oscar.
Globes will prob nominate it, but I can smell a snub coming for the Oscars.

didnt they cap it at 2 songs per submission now?
ReplyCopy URLDecember 18, 2017 at 3:00 pm #1202443623Although I love that both mystery of love and visions of gideon made the shortlist I wish only mystery of love was submitted, it has the best chance out of the two. I’m worried we’re gonna see a repeat of what has been happening to Michael Stuhlbarg and Armie Hammer where they split votes, like at sag and we end up with someone like Steve Carell making it in!
