Couldn’t find any thread dedicated to the writing honors, so thought I’d start a thread. Predict and Discuss-

Also, I am very interested to hear why so many people are predicting Amour to beat Django Unchained in Original Screenplay. Is it because this is the way the academy can honor Amour outside of Foreign Language Film? Doesn’t the film also have strong shots at Director and Actress? Are they against Tarantino or does the racial controversy hurt it’s chances?

    ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
    Amour
    Django Unchained
    Flight
    Moonrise Kingdom
    Zero Dark Thirty

    ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
    Argo
    Beasts of the Southern Wild
    Life of Pi
    Lincoln
    Silver Linings Playbook

ZD30 won the WGA, but Django Unchained wasn’t nominated. Neither was Amour, I don’t believe. The WGA win doesn’t really tell anything. For Adapted, however, it seems like the odds are in Argo’s favor (do you see what I did there?). Oscarologists are now predicting it to win over Lincoln. It’s kind of hard to predict a winner, though, because the screenplays are SO similar! They both follow how to get a hard task ti be done, and the things those people had to go through. Back to Original Screenplay, though. In my opinion, it’s between Django Unchained and ZD30. Yes Amour possesses an amazing screenplay, but foreign films have only won in this category twice (Z in 1969, and Talk to Her in 2002.) I believe that Djangi Unchained will win. The Academy obviously loves Tarantino, and this screenplay doesn’t disappoint. Like 20 minutes of this film are classic scene after classic scene. The bag scene! Oh my God! Give this guy an Oscar already!

I’m going with Tarantino for DJANGO in the Original category. I just think his GG and BAFTA wins are good indicators. He’s won before for an edgy, provocative script (PULP FICTION). I think the controversey over the racial epithets and violence didn’t harm the film’s chances as much as the torture controversey harmed ZDT’s chances across the board. AMOUR is definitely a contender, but it winning Actress and Foreign Film will be its recognition for the night.

Terrio will likely win for ARGO in Adapted Screenplay. That WGA win really confirmed it for me. Kushner could win, but LINCOLN has really fallen off. The dark horse here is BAFTA winner Russell for SLP. I’ll stick with ARGO winning just to validate its eventual Best Picture win.

What’s preventing voters from going with Kushner I wonder? Sure the film has died down but there’s no denying the power of the script and the high respect for the writer. I will still be baffled if he loses.

I don’t really know what’s stopping them from voting for him. I think he’s a marvelous writer. I think it’s less a rebuke of his script and more a vote for the film with momentum (ARGO).
