Moneyball for me. The Tree of Life is half an incredible film. Never shared in the affection at all for The Artist, The Descendents or Midnight in Paris.

None. That was a bad year for film.

Hugo was one of my favourite movies ever, and this is coming from someone who had absolutely no anticipation coming into it.

That being said, this was a pretty weak year. Not as weak as 2005 but still kinda lackluster.

I voted for The Tree of Life, but I do not share some of the other posters’ opinion that this was a weak year. I actually really like most of these (even the unjustly hated War Horse).

    My Personal List:

    50 / 50
    A Separation
    The Artist
    Drive
    Hugo
    Martha Marcy May Marlene
    Melancholia
    Moneyball
    Shame
    The Tree of Life

I would vote for Drive as best film of the year (with McQueen as Best Director for Shame), but of the Oscar nominees, it’s a close call between Hugo and The Tree of Life.

It’s my favourite year for film between now and 2007, but I didn’t really love the Oscar nominees.

I voted for “The Artist” which was my best picture choice at the time, but on another day I might choose “A Separation”. “The Artist” is probably the film I enjoyed the most in 2011 while “A Separation” is the film I most respected. That being said I have seen “Hugo” and especially “Moneyball” more than either of those films.
