“La La Land” is the current frontrunner for Best Picture, but Clayton Davis thinks this films has a major challenger right now and it is “JACKIE.”

Fox Searchlight at the last minute brought “Jackie” from Pablo Larrain and it has emerged as the greatest threat in Best Picture, of the films that have been seen. With “La La Land” making the festival rounds, weirdly skipping NYFF, the film still looks all but assured for its nomination for Best Picture, and could be the one to win it all. We have to start looking for the spoiler and Larrain’s dark and moody biopic could be it. Star Natalie Portman, delivering the single best work of her career, threatens to win her second Best Actress Oscar, joining the ranks of Jodie Foster and Hilary Swank. Co-star Peter Sarsgaard could even factor heavily in the Supporting Actor race.

I don’t think La La Land could be caught even though it would be a loser in a lot of other years. There’s a slight chance that Silence is a real contender, but I doubt it, even though it’s a surefire nomination. If anything else can get the late-game traction push with mass acclaim to win I actually think it’s Loving, which still feels highly unlikely. Manchester by the Sea, Moonlight, and Fences don’t have to battle to score nominations but are probably too far off for a win. Same with Jackie; I buy it as a contender to win actress and maybe get nominated in director, but it’s a hyperspecific female biopic, not something with a great track record to win picture lately, particularly a figure like Jackie on whom people have strong opinions which could make it controversial. Arrival looks like a contender but is by no means a lock for a nomination. Nocturnal Animals and Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk could get nominated, but I’m not predicting them in general, just as maybes if there are 9 or 10 nominees.

I don’t think a whole lot else has a shot. Sully and Hidden Figures are in the discussion. I don’t buy Lion, and Birth of a Nation isn’t happening in this category. Hell or High Water will be acknowledged elsewhere.

But can this year Presidential election change their minds? If the first woman  wins the election and becomes president, can a story about one of the most influential first lady win Best Picture. The last time a BP with a leading woman won was Million Dollar Baby and Before that Driving Miss Daisy.

The election will be old news by the time they start voting. It will get nominated for Picture, but won’t win, which is fine, considering it’ll probably win elsewhere…

    My rack right now is:

    1.La La Land

    2.Manchester By The Sea

    3.Moonlight

    4.Silence

    5.Fences

    6.Lion

    7.Jackie

    8.Loving

    9.Arrival

    10.Hidden Figures

I think Manchester By The Sea is the only real contender to La La Land, at least for right now.

    Arrival
    Fences
    Jackie
    La La Land
    Live by Night
    Manchester by the Sea
    Moonlight
    Silence

I just don’t know if I believe in Lion or Loving. Personally, I feel like they’re both films I’m going to enjoy, but I’m not sure about getting Best Picture nominations. I never believed in Billy Lynn. Sully, Nocturnal Animals, and Hidden Figures are possibilities but I say doubtful.

If anything else manages to get in, I’m going to go with Loving or Sully (replacing Live by Night).

Same, though I’m waiting for the Globes and Critics Choice to chime in before narrowing my list down, if at all. You get to predict 10 nominees, even though there probably won’t be 10. Why not use all that wiggle room to the best of your advantage? 😉
