I am not a fan of the expanded BP lineup, whether its 10 movies or between 5 and 10.  Nor the preferential ballot for that matter.

Except BP every single category at the Oscars has 5 nominees (except Make Up & Hair) with a pluraity vote so i think it should be the same for Best Picture also.

I dont understand why they expanded the lineup in the first place?
Because Dark Knight didnt make the cut?  So what!!  Many big films every year are left out of the Top 5, deal with it.  It still received 8 nominations in total and 2 wins which is not bad at all.

If the point was to get “bigger” films in the list then the fact is films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens are still not getting in.

So why not just go back to what we used to have from 1945-2008 (hope i got those years correct?) It was interesting to see which 5 films were the best of the best.

Anyway for people who are interested heres what I think would have made the cut if the Academy had stuck to the 5 film BP line up.

    2009
    Avatar
    Hurt Locker
    Inglourious Basterds
    Precious
    Up in the Air

    5/5 match with BD

    2010
    Black Swan
    Fighter
    Kings Speech
    Social Network
    True Grit

    5/5 match with BD
*Sorry dont think Inception would have made the cut (just my personal opinion)

    2011

    Artist
    Descendants
    The Help
    Hugo
    Midnight in Paris

*Possibly Moneyball instead of The Help
    4/5 match with BD

    2012
    Argo
    Life of Pi
    Lincoln
    Silver Linings Playbook
    Zero Dark Thirty

    3/5 match with BD
*i think Les Mis would have gone the Dreamgirls way ie no BP nomination

    2013
    American Hustle
    Captain Phillips
    Gravity
    12 Years a Slave
    Wolf of Wall Street

    4/5 match with BD
*Wouldnt have been surprised if Dallas Buyers or Nebraska got in instead of Captain Phillips- very competititve year!

    2014
    American Sniper
    Birdman
    Boyhood
    Grand Budapest Hotel
    Imitation Game

    4/5 match with BD
*Maybe Theory of Everything could have got in instead of American Sniper, Whiplash less likely

    2015
    Big Short
    Mad Max Fury Road
    Martian
    Revenant
    Spotlight

    4/5 match with BD

Just my opinion, what do you guys think?

Academy please go back to 5 films!!

For everyone who says this system enabled films like District 9, Winters Bone, ELIC, Amour, Philomena, Selma or Brooklyn to get in the BP lineup . . . . so what?

Their goal might have been to allow in more commercial fare, but it’s only allowed them to include a few more inspired choices than they otherwise would have on their own (A Serious Man, Winter’s Bone, The Tree of Life, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Brooklyn, etc.). So I don’t mind it, but I don’t know why they didn’t just keep it at a fixed 10.

In response to the “so what?” question at the end of the post, it seems a bit funny that your lineups for each year would be horribly boring compared to what they actually were. My personal choices for 2012-2014 from the nominees would be left out, and that would be annoying. All of them happen to be smaller films I suppose, but it’s still worthwhile to have them included. I’m fine with it in whatever form it comes in, because I don’t believe in this “filler nominee” business. The reason there’s not a set nominee count is specifically to not have any filler nominees, and to represent the academy’s choices without having to fill it with what would be filler nominees. It’s not just to get blockbusters in, and we shouldn’t have a “best blockbuster award” as some have suggested. Blockbusters already have their rewards, hundreds of millions of them really.

I’m with you all the way on going back to five nominees in Best Picture. My fear, however, is movements like #OscarsSoWhite may actually result in the Academy mulling an expansion to 10 nominees in other categories, including directing and acting.

God I hope that doesn’t happen. It’s so much more special when you’re one of five. When you’re one of ten it’s like “okay so you made the shortlist, but you weren’t really the best.” This controversy is so unneccessary.

Kinda obnoxious of you to ask for discussion and then pre-dismiss all other opinions by saying “So what?”

ColinWesley I was not pre dismissing ALL other opinions, just the one about smaller indie films being on the list. Did they ever have a chance of winning anyway?
