Of the Academy’s picks, I side with the scene-stealing Plowright, though all five are pretty damn impressive. I’d probably rank it Plowright, Richardson, Davis, Tomei, Redgrave.

That being said, Michelle Pfeiffer in “Batman Returns” trumps ’em all.

With the one-two punch of Damage (“You should have killed yourself and let me mourn you”) and The Crying Game, Richardson is my choice.

Miranda Richardson. Tomei should’ve won in 2001.

This should have gone to Davis but I’d happily go with Tomei over all of the others. I think her win is terrific.

Unpopular Oscar wins have occurred before and since Tomei. But none of them have the pop culture outrage of Tomei’s polarizing Supporting Actress win.

Women who were robbed of nominations due to the inclusion of Tomei as a nominee: Alfre Woodard in Passion Fish, Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns.

Despite two subsequent nominations Tomei’s win has not lessened its initial negative impact. The lineup of fellow nominees is still formidible. Redgrave deserves a 2nd Oscar — Davis and Richardson needed the win here. Hopefully Redgrave is given a 7th nomination possibly in Best Actress. She could use the Oscar upgrade. She is underrated based on her politics.

Though I fully support Tomei’s win, Judy Davis was wonderful in Husbands and Wives

The 1-2 punch of “Damage” and “The Crying Game” gets Richardson my vote. Davis a very close second.

Although I voted for Davis, I’m really fond of Redgrave’s work. Does anyone here like Howards End?

I love “Howards End” but I don’t think Redgrave is even the strongest supporting actress in it.

I agree there are juicer supporting turns in the movie other than Redgrave. But Redgrave’s work is the kind the Academy avoids to recognize these days in the category created for it.

    A really wonderful lineup!

Davis is one of the best imo. They’re all great but she gets my vote here.

I would have swapped Redgrave with Bonham Carter
