Yeah, Bates, though Redgrave is very memorable too. Griffiths is solid but doesn’t do anything terribly Oscar-calibur in her film. I know Blethyn’s divisive, though I think she’s pretty much pitch-perfect in that (obnoxious) role. Dench, forget it.

Of course, Joan Allen in “Pleasantville” is 10x better than the whole line-up combined.

Dench shouldn’t even have been nominated.

Indeed. Blethyn in “Secrets & Lies” is a roller coaster of a performance.

I believe her nomination here is a result of members seeing her performance in Leigh’s film after the fact and feeling guilty.

I voted for Redgrave, with Blenthyn  in second place. Dench’s win is an oddity i’ll never understand. Especially given that she’s lost for far superior films.

Dench’s win is seen as a makeup Oscar for losing Best Actress the previous ceremony.

I don’t think that would be enough on its own, though it may have factored in. I think the movie was just perceived differently by the Academy than by other people. Maybe by taste, maybe as a result of campaigning. Paltrow’s win and the BP win were also largely disputed, so I don’t see why Dench’s win wouldn’t fall in that same category.

Dench is respected. Paltrow was popular at the time of her win. Because best actress is a more difficult category for older performers to win, it seemed like a natural fit to give Dench the Oscar. No one knew she would earn a whopping 7 nominations, 5 of them in best actress.

Yes but that wouldn’t be enough for just any performance of hers to win. Her performance was good enough for the academy to see the win as a valid one, even if there were other motivations.
