What film career for Steve Carrell? Yes, he was in some films, even recieved an Oscar nomination as a filler nominee, but it would be wild to talk about a real film career in his case.

Carrell of course is building up quite a filmography himself, but this is Bonham Carter’s to lose. She has the years and the range.

This is an unfair battle LMAO. Just put Gene Hackman against Adam Sandler and get this over with.

For Howards End and Fight Club alone.

I don’t think Helena Bonham Carter has been in a bad movie… to my knowledge that is (I am not including Alice in Wonderland, since I actually like that movie and she was the best part of it).

Steve Carell, while he CAN be funny, has never really broadly appealed to me. I am in the minority who actually wasn’t a huge fan of The Office, and I liked him in his animated ventures and Foxcatcher (good on him for the Oscar nom by the way).

But comparing the two is like comparing Michael Jackson to William Hung. It doesn’t work.

Helena Bonham Carter all the way.

I’ve never found Steve Carell vaguely funny nor interesting as a dramatic actor. He’s a TV comic.

Bonham Carter can be superb. Not even mentioned here are her great performances in Wings of the Dove and Room with a View.

I wouldn’t call him a filler nominee. It kind of implies that there weren’t enough quality choices to make up a solid five. I think that “coattail nominee” or “undeserved nominee” would be more appropriate, but I’m still bitter about it. Bonham Carter, no question.

What exactly did he coattail if Foxcatcher failed to get a BP nom and Bennett Miller was never a lock to be nominated (even though I told you guys several times he would be)? Let’s not pretend Steve Carell was never 1/3 of the trio that got rave reviews ever since Cannes and all the way through Toronto. Let’s not pretend Foxcatcher didn’t collect several Ensemble awards for the work Ruffalo, Tatum and CARELL did in the movie (even though it failed to get nommed for a SAG).

You guys find Foxcatcher to be an undeserving nominee in whatever category it was nominated for? Fine. No problem. But please stop acting like it was a huge surprise for Carell to be nominated just because 1 fave of yours or 2 were snubbed. He was always in it for the nomination, keep that in mind. But throw eggs at Foxcatcher all you want if that makes you feel better. That still won’t erase the 5 nominations it got.

I was more surprised about Foxcatcher’s lack of across the board nominations. I admit I wasn’t thrilled with Carell’s performance, and one of my preferred nominees is actually Channing Tatum. I thought Carell was Supporting in the film, and would have been fine if he was there instead of Duvall. Ruffalo was my favourite of the film, and I was happy with his nomination.

I’m not going to pretend it was my favourite film of the year, but I do think Carell did not deserve to get in over other lead performances. I wasn’t surprised he got in, and I think that the film did benefit by a broad support, but it didn’t materialize with every branch. That’s why I would describe it as a coattail nominee. His performance did not give the film more nominations, like the other men in the category.

David Oyelowo, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ralph Fiennes were before him in my predictions, so that’s why I call him a filler nominee, because…

    – let’s not pretend, that he was not the standout of his own movie
    – that there were much much better performances than his this year
    – that there was a little category confusion
    – that although he hit almost all big awards, he had no real supporters among movie fans and critics…

He was NOT A SURE BET for the nomination. At all. He was running for the 5th spot alongside with the mentioned men and some others.

The Foxcatcher love is interesting, and I give you that, and I’m happy that at least your prediction came true (unlike my Shailene’s), but I’m so sad that he made it over so many deserving nominees including Tatum because of that fake noise.

This is a really hard one because I love them both. But I went with Carter.

You should have done Carell VS Ben Stiler or something like that, this is unfair battle.

I guess I’m the odd one here because I’m gonna go with Carrell (still love Helena tho, but she is usually better then the movie around her)
