I love it when a film’s ending is unclear and makes us think about it and ultimately debate it. I get the Birdman/Black Swan and the Birdman/Whiplash comparisons and I kinda agree with them. Birdman’s ending however reminded me more of the way my favorite movie of all time (Taxi Driver) ended. Did it really happen or was it all part of the lead character’s imagination. I would love to hear your opinions. Discuss.
I’ve never subscribed to the theory that the final scene is only in Travis Bickle’s mind, that is assuming the rest of the film is not only in his mind. However, I think the ending of Birdman is very clear. The final scene is clearly only takes place in Keaton’s mind as he is dying from his gunshot wound. He gets everything that he wants: the love of his critics, his public, his daughter as well as being a real, live superhero who can bounce back quickly from gunshot wounds and has the ability to fly.
