I don’t know if there is a thread for this film already, but just in case there isn’t, I created one. Talk news about the film, your hopes and anticipation for Black Mass, starring Johnny Depp.

I’m interested in this. Johnny Depp is one of favorites though his agent has been drunk a little these past couple years

It would be wonderful to see Johnny Depp do something with depth.
Please, no more silly cavorting, silly costumes (a dead bird on your head for an entire movie? really?) and poor screenplays.  It is frightening there is another Álice’ and another ‘Pirates’ coming out…I guess they made him offers he couldn’t refuse.

I hope Black Mass redeems him from the histrionic crap he has been putting out.

    The trailer is promising
and the supporting cast is excellent
and the director , Scott Cooper, has potential.

    Go, Johnny, Go
    Johnny be good

Now THAT’S a trailer! I would not be surprised if he’s got an Oscar in his hands a year from now

I don’t know why it’s surprising that Dakota Johnson does a good job. She is a very good actress and has both dramatic and comedic chops. She only has a bad rep because of Fifty Shades.

    It’s the Kristin Stewart phenomenon.

Go, go Johnny go go go….

written by Goffin, Gerry/king, Carole /.
“Don’t Bring Me Down” is track #10 on the album Retrospective. It was written by Goffin, Gerry/king, Carole /.

       “Don’t Bring Me Down”

When you complain and, and criticize
I feel I’m nothing in your eyes
It makes me feel like giving up
Because my best just ain’t good enough

Girl, I want to provide for you
And do all the things that you want me to, but

Oh, oh no, don’t bring me down
    I’m beggin’ you darlin’
Oh, oh no, don’t bring me down

    Sacrifices, I will make
I’m ready to give, as well as take
One thing I need is your respect
One thing I can’t take is your neglect

More than anything, I need your love
Then troubles are easy to rise above

Oh, oh no, don’t bring me down
Oh, no, no, no, no, no
Oh, oh no, don’t bring me down

    You complain and criticize
I feel I’m nothing in your eyes
It makes me feel like giving up
Because my best just ain’t good enough

Girl, I want to provide for you
Do all the things that you want me to, but

Oh, oh no, don’t bring me down
No, no, no, no, no, no, no
I’m beggin’, oh no, don’t bring me down
    Oh, no no, baby

Please, oh no, no don’t bring me down
    I need your tender lovin’
So please don’t bring me down
Oh, baby, baby, baby don’t hurt me

    Don’t bring me down
Oh no, please don’t bring me down

That tune alone would get me into the theatre….

The trailer looks great, but Depp is the least interesting part about it. Much more interested in Edgerton, and even Cumberbatch.

    My review:

Black Mass is a strong gangster movie and one of the strongest in recent years. Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors and though I will defend his relationship with Tim Burton even up to Dark Shadows, he has had some bumps these past few years but this is definitely a return to form for him. He is getting a lot of awards buzz for this role which is a little overboard though I wouldn’t complain too much if he earned nominations. He is truly great in this but it’s not going to be his ticket to Oscar. His is often times chilling and his soft spoken dialogue delivery and quick to turn on you mysterious persona and he doesn’t look like himself with the contacts and hair do. The make up and hair team do a great job transforming Depp into Whitey but sometimes I got lost into his piecing blue or green eyes because they were sometimes too distracting. The real show stopping performance comes from Joel Edgerton who I’ve been championing for the past few years for his wonderful performances in Warrior and Animal Kingdom. He is like a fire cracker in this movie full of energy and acing his Boston accent. On the other hand, you have Benedict Cumberbatch who is at that point in his career where he is so popular for his deep British voice that when he does an American accent it just seems off. It was the same issue I had with him in August: Osage County but he is better in this though and his part is small so it’s not too damaging to the overall movie. Kevin Bacon is also wonderful in this movie and with a little more to do he could have finally had an opportunity to get his much overdue first Oscar nomination. Corey Stoll continues to kill it with each new role he gets his hands on even though his part is small but his owns every second of it. Surpassingly Dakota Johnson was quite great in a small role as well. I thought she was awful in Fifty Shades of Grey and on SNL earlier this year but she changed my mind with this. Julianne Nicholson is also great in a small role too. Jesse Plemmons was the butt of everyone’s joke when he was on Breaking Bad getting the nickname “Meth Damon” because he resembles Matt Damon a lot and it’s funny because I caught the ending of The Departed on TV the night before watching this and Jesse Plemmons’ boston accent made him feel even more like Matt Damon in The Departed. Scorsese seems like a huge influence to this movie’s feel with Depp even feeling like a mix of Ray Liotta in Goodfellas and Jack Nicholson in The Departed (who I believe was inspired by the really Whitey in that movie). Scott Cooper directs this movie with the perfect balance of grit and captivating storytelling which was lacking in his last movie Out of the Furnace. He really stepped it up in this movie (though I still think Crazy Heart is his best). The cinematography is great, the score is eerie and cool, and the writing is wonderful too, Definitely worth seeing and a  great kick off too what looks like an exciting award season. 4 1/2 stars
