Val, a hard-working live-in housekeeper in modern day Sao Paulo, is perfectly content to take care of every one of her wealthy employers’ needs, from cooking and cleaning to being a surrogate mother to their teenage son, who she has raised since he was a toddler. But when Val’s estranged daughter Jessica suddenly shows up the unspoken but intrinsic class barriers that exist within the home are thrown into disarray. Jessica is smart, confident, and ambitious, and refuses to accept the upstairs/downstairs dynamic, testing relationships and loyalties and forcing everyone to reconsider what family really means.

Possibly brazil’s shot at next year’s oscar.

Reviews so far have been very positive , I believe it opens here in Brazil tomorrow.

If anyone has seen it would you give us a Goldderbyite insight?

It’s been in the prediction center since the beginning so I think editors may have heard that it’s a) good and b) getting a campaign in the major categories. Opens in NY this week, I might go see it.

Based on the critical reception, I guess this film will probably be Brazil’s Oscar entry (unless they choose something else).

I agree, The Second Mother is likely to be Brazil’s entry and might be its best shot at a nomination. Another candidate could be The Violin Teacher (Tudo Que Aprendemos Juntos) by Sérgio Machado, which recently debuted at the Locarno Film Festival (Closing Night film). The reviews for that film are also pretty decent.

Kim Masters, from The Hollywood Reporter, posted in twitter: “Regina Case deserves a best actress nomination for The Second Mother. That is all.”

The film has 82 in Metacritic and 98% in RottenTomatoes. Seems like the best chance of Brazil in years.

I think this just proves that with the right part, everyone, literally EVERYONE can do it and I love that.

We brazilians know what we talk about if we say that Casé was utter shit before that role and her stage show in brazil “Esquenta” is a disgrace, I have yet to see the movie .

Can you imagine Regina Casé’s… peculiar fashion style in a Oscar red carpet, though? I can’t stop laughing just thinking about it.

She’s a great actress in comedy, but I agree with you: nobody would imagine that she would make Oscar material work.

This is coming from someone who clearly doesn’t know her past as an actress. She has always been a great actress, doing tv, theater and cinema work. She was a particularly stellar presence in Rio de Janeiro’s underground theater scene in the 70s

The past is in the past, I know her past as an actress, maybe rede globo tend to turn actors into shit with time, I have had the same discussion with a lot of friends in the past, some actor can turn to shit, real quickly pending on ones career choices which is her case, but with the right director, part, we have so many examples, I don’t know if you like “Esquenta”, but I don’t think you do, I guess you wouldn’t be here if you did, doubt someone can appreciate both art and, well, that.

Don’t know if you call tell, but I am rooting to see her in the red carpet and the movie wins best foreign language picture, it would be such a moment, in times of horrifying economic crisis in brazil.

I think Case is a very popular and respected actress, she is a pioneer of brazilian tv comedy and received critical acclaim in roles like Tina Pepper in Cambalacho and Darlene in Eu, Tu, Eles. I cant understand the hate

I also love her work in Central da Periferia, Um Pé de Quê? and Cidade dos Homens

Never had any hate nor have, but really? Tina Pepper? Central da Periferia? I admit that her performance was decent in “Eu, Tu, Eles, but c’mon, Central was another stage show to sum it up. I am happy she is making right choices now, hope this can bring her more work.
