The EW link is having some issues, so here’s a youtube link as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0AhPvZ7uEE

    The trailer is gorgeous.

    Battle lines drawn.

Carol vs. Bridge of Spies for an Oscar sweep anyone?

There are no battle lines to be drawn since neither are winning picture nor director. Both have the potential for getting their star a third Oscar and that narrative could build to help both movies.

Intuition. Awards bait does not mean anything until the fourth quarter once critics and industry personnel see the goods.

That trailer is really overpacked with information. I’m not usually a fan of this overall colour palette but it’s Speilberg, and he will always have my vote of confidence until I see the film. I imagine this will get some Oscar attention, but I’m not seeing it for Hanks. Seems more like a Munich than a Lincoln to me, and Speilberg’s track record for actor nominations/wins is pretty shoddy. There is nothing in the trailer that suggests to me that this will be a huge performance for Hanks, but it definitely seems like a solid piece of filmmaking. Looking forward to it.

I can see this being the case. That being said, I feel that ‘Munich’ > ‘Lincoln’, but that’s just personal preference.

I haven’t really been blown away by anything Speilberg has done in a while now. I enjoyed Tin Tin and Indiana Jones 4 but the last time he wowed me was Catch Me if You Can so hopefully this will be that movie! It looks wonderful

Not too big into this trailer, but I think that’s just due to the editors trying to make it broad for audiences. Still looking forward to the film.

Agreed. I was pretty surprised to find out that Daniel Day-Lewis was the first.

Spielberg will always be my number one filmmaker so I’m there day one (also I feel Lincoln is probably up there with his best work so he’s still got it). Glad that he’s teaming up with Hanks again.

As for Oscars? Expect a good amount of noms and a small amount of wins. Seems to be the trend with Spielberg films as of late.

I’m not too sold on this one. I really like Spielberg, but hopefully, it’s better than Lincoln, which to me, was a real chore to sit through. I also really like Hanks, but who knows whether his work in this will top his latest career-best work in Captain Phillips. I do hope that my skepticism is proven wrong, but judging by the trailer, I am not sure whether it’ll strike a chord with me.

I see this being the Unbroken of this award season, it will get buzz but likely only get tech noms. I don’t think the academy will embrace the spy genre, the fact that there has never been a best picture nominated spy film is quite shocking to me. I hope I’m wrong and Speilberg/ Hanks make it a first!
