‘Bridget Jones’ sequel on track, says studio exec. But… — UPDATE

UPDATE: Though he might still be attached, Hugh Grant is acknowledging some issues he has with the Bridget Jones threequel. EW obtained the following statement from Grant’s rep: “Hugh is keen that Bridget Jones 3happens, but Renee, Colin and he all have some issue with the present script. They are hoping to help work them out. “

EARLIER: Amidst reports that the next Bridget Jones film was falling apart, Working Title Films issued a statement today to confirm that all was well. “Reports that Hugh Grant has exitedBridget Jones’s Baby are untrue,” said Working Title’s co-chairman Tim Bevan. “We are still working on the script hence the delay to the start of production, but the film is going ahead as planned.”

Back in 2009, Grant told a reporter that he was reluctant to appear in a third film. “I don’t think so, no. I think even Bridget Jones 2 was a mistake to be honest with you,” he said. “It wasn’t a very good script, and I resisted it for a long time, and so did Colin and so did Renee. But we got kind of conned into doing it.”

The sequel intends to reunite Renee Zellweger with Grant and Colin Firth. The original 2001 original grossed $282 million worldwide, and 2004′s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reasonbrought in another $263 million.

Good to know they thought the sequel sucked too…Especially when compared to the masterpiece that was the original.

Of all the franchises that need to be revived, I’d say BJD is dead LAST on that list. We all know the sequel SUCKED.   Plus, isn’t Renee really too old to be playing pregnant?   Bridget was cute when Renee in her 20’s and 30’s, but she’s in her 40’s now, I don’t want to see a 40 year old lady doing pratfalls and making weird faces.

That’s one of the most ageist things I’ve ever read.

Renee needs this one. I wish all of them well.

The threequel’s (rumored?) plot doesn’t bode well at all, but it all comes down to the execution in the end.
If this film manages to revive Zellweger’s career – critically well-received and hugely successful at box office, Oscar nomination could be on the horizon.
Her performance in the first installment is a paragon of a comedic performance that deserves some recognition.

Her performance in the original is (imo) the best she’s given yet and would have had no problem had she taken home the Oscar for Bridget Jones.. The sequel was enjoyable, a bit more of the same, but lacking a spark in its writing. I would definitely buy a ticket for the third..

Seriously, Renee Zellweger needs this more than fresh air. It’s almost depressing to see where her career went since the sequel. “Cinderella Man” was possibly the only blast of hope which didn’t turn out that well for her anyway. There’s not that much Hugh Grant out there either. Who would have thought 10 years ago that Colin Firth will be at top of the world and those two will be almost forgotten, especially Zellweger.

Renee really needs a hit film.
Colin Firth must love her enough to say yes to this at this
point in his career..he should boost the ” class” stature of
    a 3rd bridget Jones..
Hugh Grant really hasnt had much of a “step outside his comfort
zone” career, so he should just slide back in to this role.
    Good luck all..

Renee Zellweger needs this. Badly. Her career is in dumps. Hell, I thought I was gonna see her on “Dancing with the Stars” in couple of years! This might be really good for her. And honestly, I don’t mind to see more adventures of lovely Bridget.

As for Colin Firth, he is one of the nicest guys working in the business (met him once!) and hes not some Hollywood snob who after winning awards thinks he’s not gonna lower himself to do some light fare. He takes almost every role they offer to him because he loves to act. “St. Trinian’s” anyone? Other stars should have look at him.

Oh God, no! Actors should not act in anything, that’s very often career suicide! Mira Sorvino, Cuba Gooding, F. Murray Abraham and countless others did just that and killed their careers! If script of BJD3 is bad, please Renee, Colin and Hugh don’t do it! I say this as a big fan of Renee and Colin.

More than a hit, Renee needs a film at all. I love the first one, and Zellwegger was my second chocie for the Best Actress Oscar (behind Kidman) that year. That’s a nomination that I totally loved. Looking forward to this one, though just because I like Renee to have a film career again.

I have been in-love with Renee since her early days of Jerry Maguire. She has created some of the greatest characters I’ve ever seen and at one time, I thought she would for sure be considered our greatest living [American] actress once Meryl Streep is no longer with us. Unfortunately, her star-power has fallen.

Now more than ever, I feel she should do a great role on a TV series, a long term character she gets to sink her teeth into. I would also love to see her do Broadway. She does have a theatre background; though she graduated with a degree in Literature, she said she did every theatre production she could at her college.

Lastly, check out this pre-Bridget Jones acceptance speech. It’s her first major showbiz award, the Golden Globe for Nurse Betty, present to her by future costar, Hugh Grant. It’s 100% authentic and honest and Renee at her true best.

I love Renee and both Bridget Jones films (I will concede that the first was far superior). Renee definitely needs this film, and it will at least score her a Golden Globe nomination and that should be enough for her to resume her once stellar film career.

It’s incredible how Zellweger’s career fell apart after winning the Oscar.
