@NoahArlington Hammer and Stuhlbarg were snubbed in Best Supporting Actor, while Guduagino was snubbed in Best Director. That sounds like underperforming to me.

Deserved. He was truly phenomenal as was the film.

Everyone already knew that was going to happen. It wasn’t a shock when their names weren’t announced. Anything lower than 4 noms would have been underperforming but it didn’t so

and @atypcal not everyone who doesn’t agree with your opinions is a troll, just saying. I think you should learn how to a have a conversation without resorting to name calling right off the bad. it makes you look uncivil

I watched this on Saturday and was stunned by Chalamet’s performance. I had read the raves, I knew about the awards… but wasn’t really prepared for it. The script doesn’t do a lot of digging deep into Aciman’s novel, so this kid takes upon himself to do it. There’s not a line he doesn’t deliver with perfection. Chalamet adds colors and layers that perfect a character that was already rich the book. It’s also incredibly brave. A couple of weeks ago I watched BPM and was swept away by Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, which I thought would be my favorite in the year… I was very wrong. Chalamet clearly has skills and a technical repertoire that allows compelling naturalistic performances to come alive. It’s sad to imagine him suffering to find good roles in America — go to Europe, boy, work the auteur circuit.

Yes, the film had the potential for 7 or 8 Oscar nominations with the right momentum and push.

They we’re afraid to push the movie. It was as if they didn’t want to start the controversy of some huge debate about Elio’s age. Especially during these recent times.

    Great movie.
Final fifteen minutes are sublime cinema for the years to come.
It should be a contender for best picture and in my book it would win exactly the three categories where received nominations: best acotr, adapted screenplay and song.
But it should have been nominated also for director and Michael Sthulbarg for supporting actor (Hammer was great too).
Timothee gives one of the best breaktrhough performances I’ve ever seen and hands down should win best actor over Oldman.

Every film has potential for more nominations. Just because they don’t get them doesn’t mean they flopped.

I’m fully aware of your obvious point. My opinion stands regardless that the film underperformed in both box office and Oscar nominations, and it’s not changing. Move on.

We’re just having a discussion. There is no need to get defensive.

The film started losing steam around the Globes and SAG, so it did get the nominations it was expected to get. It also did have its “moment” on the coasts. It was never going to be one of those movies that would’ve had that in the fly-over states.

In short, it hit where it needed to hit.

A couple questions I had about the movie and wondered if anyone had an opinion. What did the bruise and injury on Oliver side from the bike fall represent. I wondered if it had any meaning it just was kind of thrown in ? Plus I wondered why Luca didn’t have Oliver eat the peach in the movie and why was Elio so upset when he tried too? It was the opposite in the book. Actually even the toilet played a significant role in the book Elio made one comment in the movie that brought light too it. “Do I Know You “. Lol!!!
