Not sure where u guys got the idea where CMBYN hit almost all the BP list…Dunkirk and this are the only movies this year that has hit every BP list they were elligible for.

From what movies were eligible for:

3B missed indie spirits and NBR

    SoW missed NBR

lady Bird missed Gotham and BAFTA

    Get Out missed BAFTA/AACTA

What does that have to do with this?

They’re very different flicks and good flicks in their own right. I had some similar issues with both: the lack of romantic chemistry between the two leads (at least CMBYN had some legit sexual chemistry), how not very well fleshed out the core “relationship” is in both, the constant skirting-around-the-issues dialogue, how the “other dude” just wasn’t all that interesting compared to the lead. I did find ‘Name’ to be more purely entertaining and refreshing in its lack of tragedy. But I also bought into ‘Brokeback’s story a bit more, and it had more genuine tension. Both are movies I appreciate more than I like. Though I suppose I slightly prefer ‘Brokeback’.

I’d take Weekend, Moonlight and Maurice over either.

someone stated it hit almost all the BP list, but it hit every single one.

Eh, kinda just sounds like you wanted a thread to say how much you love CMBYN, Thomas.  Haha!  Not that there’s anything wrong with that…  But I don’t get the impression you’re really ready to hear anything except “CMBYN is the best choice” at least in the sense of being ready to discuss it and really pick apart the reasons why or why not.

You’ve obviously been touched by an angel, I mean, Elio, and the story that Aciman wrote clearly struck many, many chords with you…

It SOUNDS like CMBYN may also be “your” movie.  Because, quite frankly, Brokeback was mine.  I will always remember where I was when I read the short story for the first time, just as I will always remember where I was when Ennis held the two shirts to his chest and breathed in one last time…

I hope CMBYN holds up as well as it does for you (and as well as BM does for me) in fifteen years!  🙂

I loved Brokeback. I loved Moonlight. But Elio stole my heart.

CMBYN was sure nominated for Best Picture a lot. Maybe not all but a lot. I did say Brokeback won mostly all. As far as I remember only A History of Violence and Crash beat it.

Maybe I’m not high brow enough, I don’t know, but Brokeback was a snore-fest for me.  Yes there were themes of repression and societal expectations of marriage, but the pace was so damn slow.

Call Me By Your Name is beautiful and really pushes the boundaries of LGBT cinema and storytelling almost to the point of skirting the definition of an LGBT movie…but there will never be another Moonlight.  I hate the question of, “What’s your favorite movie?”  Way too hard to answer, but if you forced me to pick, I’d pick Moonlight.

Weekend is another great one, could watch that any time.

A History of Violence wasn’t nominated for BP.

See, Weekend is a film I can’t stand.  So indeed, to each their own.  It is really amusing though to see the stalwart CMBYN devotees exalt it to the next-next level.  It’s how a lot of the Brokeback fans behaved; they’re much calmer now, for the most part.  Time takes care of a lot of this.

Not that there’s anything wrong with obsessing and shouting to the heavens how much you love your favorite movie(s), but let’s not kid ourselves, here: the CMBYN fan-base is one award show from imploding and/or exploding and finally becoming the supernova it’s been teasing since it began.

How many of you hadn’t read the book, CMBYN, btw, before it came out as a movie?  And what’s the age range?  I feel like a lot of the really, really passionate Elio-lytes are maybe two-three years older than Chalamet himself.  Just spitballin’ though; I can imagine such a universal love story that transcends so many barriers and that’s been made so immaculately as if touched by the Universal Hand his/herself doesn’t need age to back up its power.

    😉

What are the glaring issues with CMBYN. I heard it was a bit slow and a bit too long. I don’t agree with either. The relationship between Elio and Oliver takes some time and when they finally kiss and make love we are so ready and it is so sexy. I don’t think 2 hours is too long for a movie. I was not bored for one second

if ur going to count every single critic group as part of ur argument, then there’s multiple movies that beat Brokeback Mountain….
