    I finally
saw “Ida” and I have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed. I’m not
quite certain that it’s the foreign language film frontrunner that everyone
thinks that it is. Maybe…I’m not sure.

    I actually
switched my Golden Globe prediction to “Force Majeure,” which I
suspect might have more appeal to HFPA members. There’s a nice blend of drama,
action and humor. Also – I’m wondering if Poland’s “Ida,” Russia’s
“Leviathan” and Estonia’s “Tangerines” might cancel each
    other out.

    I’ve read
through the Foreign Language Film thread…but wanted to specifically ask here:
Does anyone else think that “Force Majeure” can beat “Ida”
    at the Golden Globes?

Ida certainly has the momentum after winning all of those critics awards but I still think Force Majeure will win at the Globes. It stands out and it may appeal to the HFPA with its mix of drama and comedy.

I think Force Majeure will win. I was similarly underwhelmed by Ida, and though I don’t understand what you mean about the others cancelling each other out. Force Majeure will absolutely appeal to HFPA, and I look forward to seeing what they pick.

I just saw Force Majeure yesterday, and I have to say I was kind of underwhelmed. It’s good, but I got nowhere near the impact I did from Ida. Haven’t seen Leviathan yet, but I’d say it’d be disappointing to see Ida losing to that.

Put me on the side of Force Majeure. It doesn’t feel nearly as important as Ida, though…

Does that refer to Force Majeure or Leviathan? I’d be overjoyed to see Leviathan win, even though I loved Ida. It’s payback time for losing all those European Film Awards!

I still expect Ida can win the Globe because I don’t think the usual trends/prejudices with the group apply in this category. They voted for The White Ribbon, A Separation and Amour after all (the latter over crowdpleaser The Intouchables). It all depends on where the buzz is, and Ida has buzz, though Leviathan can surge after its Xmas release date.

Sorry, awkward sentence construction. Referring just to Force.

I loved Force Majeure. One of my top 10 fav movies I’ve seen so far.

Sadly, I haven’t seen Ida yet; will update when I do. It did win lots of European Film Awards including best pic.
